WVU’s Anderson Shares Big 12 Weekly Newcomer Award

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University freshman running back Jaylen Anderson was named Big 12 Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week for his season-high rushing performance in the Mountaineers' 24-19 victory at Oklahoma State last Saturday.
The Perry, Ohio, resident ran 15 times for 155 yards and scored touchdowns of 54 and 57 yards in helping WVU to its first victory over Oklahoma State since 2014.
The 5-foot-11, 214-pound freshman recorded the first 100-yard rushing effort of his career, and the 155 yards represented the second highest rushing total by a Mountaineer running back this season. He finished the season with 35 carries for 275 yards and two touchdowns in six games.
Texas running back Bijan Robinson and Oklahoma's Dillon Gabriel shared offensive honors, Texas defensive end Jaylan Ford earned defensive honors and Texas Tech's Trey Wolff picked up special teams accolades.
Anderson shared the newcomer award with Gabriel.
With last Saturday's victory, West Virginia snapped Oklahoma State's 14-game home winning streak, which was the sixth-longest active streak in the country.
Anderson joins a list of WVU Big 12 weekly honorees that includes offensive players of the week Garrett Greene (Nov. 14) and Tony Mathis Jr. (Oct. 17), special teams players of the week Oliver Straw (Nov. 14 and Oct. 24) and Casey Legg (Oct. 17), and newcomer of the week CJ Donaldson (Sept. 5).
West Virginia wrapped up the 2022 season with a 5-7 overall record and a 3-6 mark in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers earned victories over Towson, archrival Virginia Tech, defending Big 12 champion Baylor, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State.
The triumph over the Sooners on Saturday, Nov. 12, was West Virginia's first against Oklahoma since joining the Big 12 in 2012.
