MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a record-setting performance from senior
Mary Tucker, the No. 5-ranked West Virginia University rifle team defeated No. 11 NC State, 4751-4687, on Friday afternoon at the WVU Rifle Range in Morgantown.
West Virginia's aggregate score of 4751 set a new program record and was one point shy of tying the NCAA record of 4752. WVU's score broke the previous record of 4742 vs. Murray State on Nov. 12, 2017.
Additionally, the Mountaineers shot a 2365 in smallbore to beat out NC State (2323) in the discipline and set a new program record. The mark broke the previous record of 2364 at Navy on Jan. 22, 2022.
WVU also beat out NC State in air rifle, 2386-2364.
West Virginia was led by a record setting performance by Tucker, who shot an 1196 overall, including a 597 in smallbore and a 599 in air rifle. The Sarasota, Florida, native set the NCAA record for aggregate score and tied the national record for smallbore score in the match. Her 599 in air rifle tied her season high.
Tucker also set the program records for aggregate and smallbore score in the contest.
Outside of Tucker, seven additional Mountaineers finished inside the top 10 of the individual match leaderboard. Five WVU shooters claimed the top-five spots on the leaderboard.
Juniors
Tal Engler and
Matt Sanchez checked in behind Tucker and each shot an 1185 overall. Engler's score included a career-high 591 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle. Sanchez checked in with season bests in smallbore (588) and air rifle (597).
Senior
Akihito Shimizu came in fourth place in the match, with an 1184 combined score. The Tokushima, Japan, native shot a 588 in smallbore and a 596 in air rifle.
Rounding out the match's top five was senior
Malori Brown, who tallied an aggregate score of 1182. The China Spring, Texas, native posted a 589 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle.
Junior
Molly McGhin checked in at No. 7 on the individual leaderboard and shot an 1177 overall, which included a 583 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle.
Behind her was fifth-year senior
Verena Zaisberger, who came in eighth place with an aggregate score of 1176. The Hohenems, Austria, native finished the match with a 583 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle.
Senior
Calista Smoyer claimed the final spot inside the match's top 10, with an 1174 overall. The Slatington, Pennsylvania, native netted a 584 in smallbore and a 590 in air rifle.
Rounding out scores for West Virginia, sophomore
Natalie Perrin checked in with an 1171 overall (581 smallbore, 590 air rifle), while freshman
Visnu Pandian tallied an aggregate total of 1130 (549 smallbore, 581 air rifle). Junior
Becca Lamb shot a 588 in smallbore.
West Virginia has concluded its schedule for the fall semester. The Mountaineers return to action on Friday, Jan. 13, when they travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, to square off against Alaska-Fairbanks.
