
Mountaineers Race Past Army and Navy

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team collected its 17th win this season, downing No. 6 Navy, 4745-4719, and No. 16 Army, 4745-4683, on Saturday morning inside the WVU Shell Building at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range.
The wins mark the Mountaineers' 12th over-ranked opponents this season and move WVU to a perfect 4-0 in Great America Rifle Conference action.
The Mountaineers produced winning efforts in both smallbore and air rifle, with scores of 2356 and 2389, respectively. The Midshipmen finished with scores of 2338 in smallbore and 2381 in air rifle. Army finished with a smallbore score of 2338 and an air rifle score of 2345.
For smallbore and air rifle, junior Griffin Lake, sophomores Ashlyn Blake, Camryn Camp and Jennifer Kocher, and freshman Oceanne Muller served as counters.
Lake finished in first place on the overall leaderboard with a score of 1191. He hit a first-place mark of 595 in smallbore to open the day before turning in 596 in air rifle, which was good enough to tie for fifth place. His score in smallbore was a career best.
Kocher (1186) finished in third place and Blake (1185) finished in fourth, behind Navy's Tyler Wee, who scored a perfect 600 in air rifle. Kocher and Blake each hit a mark of 598 in air rifle, the second-best score, and added scores of 588 and 587 in smallbore, respectively.
Camp finished in sixth place with a 1182 after scoring a 586 in smallbore and a 596 in air rifle. Lauri Syrja finished in seventh place with a 1180 (586 SB – 594 AR). Jack Ogoreuc and Jacob Wisman finished in a tie for ninth place with matching 1178 totals. Ogoreuc hit a mark of 589 in smallbore and air rifle, while Wisman managed a season-high 592 in air rifle and a 586 in smallbore.
Mueller scored a 1176 (579 SB – 597 AR) as Maximus Duncan added a 1174 (581 SB – 593 AR). Hana Strakusek competed only in air rifle and finished with a score of 595.
West Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14, when they close out the regular season against Kentucky inside the WVU Shell Building at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range in Morgantown. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
With a win against Kentucky, the Mountaineers will claim their 17th GARC regular season title and the program's third straight.
