
West Virginia Hits Best Score of the Season Against No. 6 Navy

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team collected its second straight Great America Rifle Conference match, downing No. 6 Navy, 4755-4724, on Saturday on the road. It marks the Mountaineers' highest aggregate score of the season.
The win marks the Mountaineers' 10th over a ranked opponent this season and moves WVU to a perfect 3-0 in Great America Rifle Conference Action. It is also the highest-ranked win of the season.
The Mountaineers produced winning efforts in both smallbore and air rifle, with scores of 2362 and 2393, respectively. The Midshipmen finished with scores of 2343 in smallbore and 2381 in air rifle. West Virginia's mark in air rifle was just one point off a program and NCAA record in the discipline.
For smallbore and air rifle, juniors Lauri Syrja and Griffin Lake, sophomore Jennifer Kocher and freshman Oceanne Muller served as counters. Additionally, Freshmen Ashlyn Blake counted in smallbore and Camryn Camp counted in air rifle. The Mountaineers claimed seven of the top 10 aggregate scores on the afternoon.
Lake led the charge for the Mountaineers for the second straight week, totaling a 1192. He finished in first place in both smallbore and air rifle with a 593 and a 599. Kocher finished just behind in second place as the only other competitor to break 1190. She got to her 1190 total with a second-place smallbore mark of 592 and a fourth-place mark of 598 in air rifle.
Camp and Blake finished in a tie for fourth place with similar 1187 totals. Camp scored a 590 in smallbore and a 597 in air rifle, while Blake hit a smallbore mark of 591 and an air rifle score of 596.
Muller finished in seventh place after scoring a 1185. She tied with Lake for the top air rifle score with a 599 and added a 586 in smallbore. Jack Ogoreuc produced a career-high mark of 1183. His smallbore score of 591 was also a career-high, as he also scored a 592 in air rifle.
Syrja and Jacob Wisman finished in a tie for 10th place with scores of 1177. Syrja scored a 583 in smallbore and a 594 in air rifle, as Wisman managed a 589 in smallbore and a 588 in air rifle. Maximus Duncan rounded out the scoring with a 1169 (576 SB – 593 AR).
The Mountaineers are 35-8 all-time against Navy in a series that dates back to 1966.
West Virginia is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they take on Army inside the WVU Shell Building at the Bill McKenzie Mobile Rifle Range in Morgantown. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET.
