MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior midfielder AJ Rodriguez of the West Virginia University women's soccer team has been named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
The honor marks the first of Rodriguez's career, while it is WVU's third Big 12 honor this season. Additionally, Rodriguez becomes the first Mountaineer to earn the conference's offensive honor since Alina Stahl collected the weekly award on March 29, 2021.
The Austin, Texas, native notched her first career brace and led the Mountaineers to a come-from-behind, 3-2 win at Oklahoma on Oct. 23. In its final road game of the regular season, WVU fell behind, 2-0, early, but Rodriguez provided a much-needed spark, scoring back-to-back goals in the 38th and 73rd minutes to equalize the score line. West Virginia went on to earn a 3-2, comeback victory over the Sooners.
Rodriguez's brace marked her first career two-goal performance, as she now leads the team with five goals on the year. She became West Virginia's second two-goal scorer this season, as well as the squad's 128th in program history.
West Virginia now returns to Morgantown to wrap up regular-season play, welcoming Kansas State to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 27. The match is slated for 7 p.m. ET, and is the team's Senior Night, as the Mountaineers celebrate the careers of five senior members of the squad.
