Texas Tech Too Much For West Virginia Saturday in Lubbock

Box Score Behren Morton threw two touchdown passes and Tahj Brooks added a pair of rushing scores to power Texas Tech to a 48-10 victory over West Virginia at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas, Saturday afternoon.

The victory today was the fourth straight for the Red Raiders over the Mountaineers dating back to the 2018 season.

Morton completed 28 of 45 passes for 325 yards, Brooks contributed 107 yards on 17 carries and Xavier White was the game's top receiver with eight catches for 139 yards.

The well-rested Red Raiders, coming off an open week, scored the first three times they had the football to build a 17-3 halftime lead.

"Coming off a bye week, I thought they were good and we were equally bad," West Virginia coach Neal Brown said. "I am disappointed as I have ever been as a football coach in my entire career."

Brooks capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive when he ran 19 yards untouched into the end zone on the game's opening possession. He added a 1-yard score five minutes later to complete a 16-play, 80-yard march.

On both Tech scoring drives, West Virginia had opportunities to create turnovers. Safety Aubrey Burks saw an interception go through his hands and what appeared to be a Morton fumble on Tech's next possession was not reviewed by the replay official.

In all, WVU had at least four opportunities to create turnovers in the first half and came up empty on all of them.

West Virginia's only score was a Casey Legg 38-yard field goal with 45 seconds left in the first quarter to cap a 15-play, 61-yard drive.

The Red Raiders added a Trey Wolff 46-yard field goal with 12:25 left in the second quarter.

The Mountaineers' final two possessions of the first half ended on downs and a Dadrion Taylor-Demerson interception in the end zone with seven seconds remaining.

West Virginia's opening possession of the third quarter also ended on a turnover when Malik Dunlap wrestled a 50-50 ball away from Bryce Ford-Wheaton down the far sideline at the Red Raider 42. Two plays later, Morton connected on a 55-yard touchdown pass to White.

Wolff's conversion kick made it 24-3, Texas Tech.

West Virginia, which came into today's game with a long list of injured players, added to it significantly today. Running backs Tony Mathis Jr. and Justin Johnson Jr., and linebacker Lance Dixon sustained first-half injuries and did not return. Then, starting left tackle Wyatt Milum was helped off the field on WVU's second offensive possession of the third quarter.

The Mountaineers began the game without starting left guard James Gmiter, who did not make the trip.

Morton's second touchdown pass went for 12 yards to a sliding Loic Founji in the back of the end zone with 6:56 left in the third quarter. That play capped a 12-play, 91-yard Red Raider drive.

West Virginia got its only touchdown of the game nearly two minutes later when Daniels completed a 28-yard pass to Ford-Wheaton down the far sideline as he fell inside the pylon. Defensive pass interference was called on the play but was declined.

Legg's conversion kick reduced West Virginia's deficit to 31-10.

Following a CJ Donaldson fumble at midfield, Tech tacked on seven more when SaRodorick Thompson broke three tackles and tight-roped the far sideline for a 13-yard touchdown, capping an eight-play, 50-yard drive. Wolff's PAT made it 38-10, Tech.

A Daniels interception on another 50-50 ball, his third, led to three more points on Wolff's 26-yard chip shot field goal with 11:58 left.

Donovan Smith was in the game at quarterback for Texas Tech's final touchdown, a 2-yard touchdown pass to Brady Boyd.

"We stunk on offense today, the worst showing we've had," Brown said. "Defensively, it's not fair to judge them because they faced so many plays. It was just bad football."

Daniels' day ended after that interception and backup Garrett Greene came into the game on West Virginia's next offensive possession.

Daniels completed 23 of his 36 pass attempts for 194 yards and a touchdown with three interceptions. WVU's ground game, which came into this afternoon averaging 191.3 yards per game, managed only 76 yards on 23 carries.

The Red Raiders, averaging just 119.2 yards per contest on the ground, accounted for 239 yards this afternoon. Overall, the Red Raiders outgained West Virginia 594 to 282.

Today's loss was West Virginia's worst since enduring a 42-6 defeat at Iowa State to conclude the 2020 regular season.

"This team has been a rollercoaster. We played really well against a good football team (versus Baylor) and won the game, but then we played as badly as we could play the game of football today," Brown said. "It is unbelievably frustrating, to say the least."

The loss drops West Virginia's record to 3-4, 1-3 ahead of next Saturday's matchup against eighth-ranked TCU at Milan Puskar Stadium.

Late Saturday evening, the Big 12 Conference announced a noon kick off time for the TCU contest, which will be televised nationally on ESPN.

Texas Tech improves to 4-3, 2-2 and will await a home date against Baylor next Saturday.
