HARRISONBURG, Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against James Madison on Wednesday night at Sentara Park.
The Mountaineers (4-6-4, 1-1-4 Sun Belt) scored first but were unable to hold the lead in the second half. Junior midfielder Ryan Crooks tallied WVU's goal in the 35th minute, his third of the season, while JMU (5-6-3, 1-2-2 Sun Belt) answered in the 73rd.
In all, WVU outshot the Dukes, 11-9, including 6-4 in shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Jackson Lee made three saves in his return to the lineup, and they were all critical in maintaining the tie. The Perth, Australia, native made a diving stop with the match scoreless in the 13th minute, and he denied a pair of shots in the 81st and 90th minutes with the match on the line.
Crooks opened the scoring with his 35th-minute goal after sophomore midfielder Otto Ollikainen fed him a pass inside the box. WVU tallied five, first-half shots, all of them on goal.
In the second half, JMU equalized in the 73rd minute after a Mountaineer miscue in their defensive third. Then, the Dukes nearly won it with just seconds remaining, but a hard shot hit the post.
Junior forward Yutaro Tsukada and freshman forward Marcus Caldeira each finished with three shots on the night to lead West Virginia. Crooks and redshirt senior midfielder/defender Dyon Dromers had two shots each.
With the result, the Mountaineers are now unbeaten in their last five matches. WVU also moved to 3-6-1 all-time against James Madison. Of note, Wednesday's match was the first between the two schools since 2015.
Up next, WVU returns to Morgantown for its home finale against Georgia State on Sunday, Oct. 23. Kickoff of the Senior Night matchup at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.
