
West Virginia Set for Annual Pink Match

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team readies for a nationally televised matchup against Baylor on Sunday, Oct. 16. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown is tabbed for 3 p.m. ET.
The contest is the squad's annual Pink Match for breast cancer awareness, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink, as the team celebrates its annual fundraising efforts for the WVU Cancer Institute. Pink t-shirts will be available for fans with a $10 donation. There also will be post-match autographs with the team following the conclusion of the game.
Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com or calling 1-800-WVU GAME. When purchasing in advance, tickets are $5 each. At the stadium ticket window, which opens at 2 p.m. on Sunday, tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups. The discounted online pricing will be available until kickoff. WVU students are admitted free with a valid WVU Student ID.
Sunday's contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU, with Glenn Davis and Jessica Stamp on the call. The game also can be heard on 91.7 FM (WWVU) in Morgantown, and live stats are available at WVUsports.com.
Sunday's contest marks the 13th meeting all time between West Virginia (4-4-6, 1-1-3 Big 12) and Baylor (4-7-2, 2-3 Big 12), as WVU holds an 8-2-2 lead in the series. The Mountaineers and Bears have met in the regular season each year since WVU joined the conference in 2012, while they have met three times in the Big 12 Tournament. The two squads met twice in 2021, including once in the regular season and once in the conference tournament.
In the first meeting on Oct. 24, WVU and BU played to a 0-0, double overtime draw in Waco. Keeper Kayza Massey made a career-high tying seven saves in the 110-minute match to help salvage the scoreless tie. In the second meeting on Oct. 31 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament, an 80th-minute goal from Dilary Heredia-Beltran lifted WVU to a 1-0 win and a berth into the semifinals of the tournament.
To open this week's homestand, West Virginia fell, 2-1, to No. 22 Texas on Oct. 13, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers went up early with a goal from Heredia-Beltran in the 22nd minute, but WVU was plagued by a red card and penalty-kick goal by Texas at 33:53 to tie things up going into the half. The visiting Longhorns found the back of the net again in the 58th minute to take the lead and the eventual win.
Texas led WVU in shots, 14-6, as well as shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (7-3). Massey also made five stops in the contest. Heredia-Beltran led the West Virginia offense with one goal and a pair of shots, while fifth-year senior forward Lauren Segalla also placed a pair of shots on frame.
Massey ranks second in the Big 12 Conference and No. 36 nationally with six shutouts on the year. The Ottawa, Ontario, native also ranks second in the league in save percentage (0.812) and fourth in goals-against average (0.857).
Michelle Lenard is in her first season as the head coach of the Baylor women's soccer team, after she was hired as the program's sixth head coach on Dec. 11, 2021. Lenard has led the squad to a record of 4-7-2 in her first campaign with the Bears. Baylor also is 2-3 in Big 12 Conference play after securing a 2-3 win at Iowa State on Oct. 13.
Freshman forward/midfielder Reneta Vargas paces the team's offense with five goals and 10 points. Five different Bears have tallied two assists to lead the squad in the category. In goal, junior keeper Lauren Traywick has started 11 matches, owning a 1.77 goals-against average and a 0.725 save percentage
