MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University sophomore linebacker Jared Bartlett was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week following his three-sack performance in the Mountaineers' 27-21 victory over Virginia Tech last Saturday afternoon.
The Suwanee, Georgia, resident's three sacks were a career high and the most by a WVU player since Darius Stills had three at Baylor on Oct. 31, 2019.
Bartlett's Saturday stat line also included a season-high five tackles and forced fumble that he recovered. This is the first time he has been recognized for the Big 12's weekly award.
Oklahoma State's Jaylen Warren was named the Big 12's offensive and newcomer of the week, while the Cowboys' Jason Taylor II captured the conference's special teams player of the week award.
Against the Hokies, West Virginia produced six sacks total, which was the most by a Mountaineer team since last year's Baylor game in Morgantown.
WVU had three red zone stops to hold off the Hokies and now leads the country in red zone defense, permitting its opponents just a 36.4% success rate. The Mountaineer defense also ranks fourth nationally in tackles for loss with an average of 10.3 per game.
West Virginia (2-1) returns to the road to face fourth-ranked Oklahoma this Saturday in a game that will kick off at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC.
Earlier today, West Virginia's homecoming game against Texas Tech on Saturday, Oct. 2, has been pegged for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
College football Hall of Famer Darryl Talley will have his jersey No. 90 officially retired during an on-field presentation before the game. The contest has also been designated a Stripe the Stadium game with fans sitting in even numbered sections encouraged to wear gold and odd numbered sections to wear blue. This year's Stripe the Stadium contest is being presented by the West Virginia Lottery.
Tickets for the Texas Tech and other remaining home dates against Iowa State (Oct. 30), Oklahoma State (No. 6) and Texas (Nov. 20) remain on sale and can be purchased by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office toll-free at 1-800-WVU GAME or by logging on to WVUGAME.com.
