Pitching matchups for both games this weekend are to be announced.
WVU (18-23) is 0-1 all-time against Miami (21-22). The two schools' only other meeting prior to this weekend came on Feb. 25, 2011, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The RedHawks topped the Mountaineers, 12-5.
Overall, West Virginia is 110-80-1 against members of the Mid-American Conference.
Last time out, the Mountaineers defeated Marshall, 4-1, on May 11, in Morgantown. WVU used a three-run, second inning and allowed just two hits all evening in the midweek victory. The result helped West Virginia win its 11th game over the Thundering Herd in its last 13 tries. Additionally, WVU improved to 50-25 all-time against the in-state foe.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Carlson Reed got the win in the Marshall game after tossing four strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. At the plate, junior outfielder Austin Davis finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, while senior catcher/outfielder Paul McIntosh hit his third home run in the last five games. With the win, WVU extended its home, midweek win streak to 19 games, dating back to April 3, 2017.
With 15 hits in his last eight games, Davis leads WVU with a .306 average at the plate. McIntosh's seven home runs are a team best, while freshman infielder Mikey Kluska's 24 RBI are good for No. 1 on the squad.
On the mound, senior left-handed pitcher Jackson Wolf is 4-5 with a 3.31 ERA in 11 starts this spring. His 86 strikeouts rank No. 3 in the Big 12. Entering the weekend, the Mountaineer pitching staff ranks No. 11 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12 in strikeouts per nine innings (10.9). WVU tallied 14 total strikeouts in its last game against Marshall.
Miami is led by eighth-year coach Danny Hayden. The RedHawks enter with a 21-22 mark on the season, including 14-15 in MAC play. Last weekend, Miami split a four-game series at Ohio, from May 7-9. Of note, the RedHawks are making their first-ever appearance in Morgantown this weekend.
Senior infielder Will Vogelgesang leads the team in a variety of offensive categories, including average (.319), hits (51), triples (5), RBI (27) and stolen bases (9). Additionally, sophomore infielder Brian Zapp's five home runs are good for No. 1 on the team.
Meanwhile, junior right-handed pitcher Sam Bachman is a highly touted prospect, who is 3-2 with a 1.47 ERA in 43.0 innings of work this season. He has struck out 69 batters. As a staff, Miami has a team ERA of 3.39, good for No. 12 in the nation
