Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia had several opportunities to knock off 12
th-ranked Oklahoma here at the WVU Coliseum this afternoon, but the 14
th-ranked Mountaineers just couldn't come up with the winning plays when they needed them most.
Oklahoma got a game-high 28 points from Austin Reaves, including the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds left, to lift the Sooners to a 91-90 double-overtime victory this afternoon.
West Virginia had two good chances to win the game in regulation, but Deuce McBride couldn't get a pair of shot attempts to go down ahead of the horn.
Then in the second overtime,
Derek Culver got the ball in the lane and tried to score over Kur Kuath, but Kuath blocked Culver's shot and knocked the ball off of Culver out of bounds with seven seconds to go.
West Virginia's
Gabe Osabuohien tied up De'vion Harman on the inbound pass to give the Mountaineers possession of the basketball with six seconds left. After a 30-second timeout called by the Sooners, West Virginia nearly turned the ball over on the inbound pass but got another opportunity to win the game with three seconds left on a side-court inbounds play.
WVU opted to lob the ball into Culver near the basket and he had a good opportunity to win it, but his shot grazed off the rim and
Jalen Bridges' follow-up try to win it was also unsuccessful.
"He caught it right under the basket and I kept telling him, 'You don't think it's a lot of time but it's a lot of time … don't hurry it,'" West Virginia coach
Bob Huggins said.
The Mountaineers also lost this one at the free throw line where they misfired on 10 of their 21 attempts. The two biggest misses came with 45 seconds remaining in regulation and West Virginia leading 72-70.
Osabuohien, a 44.1% free throw shooter, rebounded a
Sean McNeil miss and was trying to get rid of the basketball but he was fouled by Reaves while doing so.
He went to the line and missed both.
Culver, who finished with a team-high 29 points and 14 rebounds, was only three-of-seven from the line and McBride, an 83.5% free throw shooter, missed three of his eight attempts.
"(Missed free throws) killed us and missing one-footers repeatedly all day didn't help us either," Huggins said. "We just didn't finish."
Oklahoma (13-5, 8-4) had a nine-point lead with 5:38 left in regulation on Reaves' short jumper, but McNeil responded with three consecutive 3s to tie the game at 68 with 3:28 to go.
After McBride's two free throws gave WVU a 72-70 advantage with 2:10 remaining, Umoja Gibson's driving layup with 21 seconds left tied the game at 72.
OU had a 79-77 lead in the first overtime until Bridges knotted things up when he tipped in McNeil's missed 3 to force a second overtime.
As he did the first time these two teams met in Norman when he scored a game-high 29 points, Gibson contributed 21 by hitting five-of-10 from 3. The junior guard was a combined 13-of-21 from 3-point range in OU's two regular season victories over West Virginia this year.
"We said we weren't going to let the little guy beat us again and he made shots," Huggins said.
Harmon scored 13, Elijah Harkless added 12 before fouling out in the second overtime, and forward Brady Manek added 11.
"The bottom line is we couldn't guard them," Huggins said. "We couldn't keep them out of the lane all day and it was a simple ball screen. We tried to switch it. We tried to double it and we couldn't stay in front of them."
Manek and Reaves managed to play both overtimes with four fouls each.
McNeil scored all 21 of his points in the second half, connecting on five-of-10 from 3, while McBride added 19 although he was just six-of-19 from the floor.
Gibson played 49 of the 50 minutes for Oklahoma while Bridges logged a team-high 48 minutes for the Mountaineers. Bridges grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds while finishing with eight points.
Overall, Oklahoma shot 44.9% from the floor (35 of 78) and 34.4% from 3-point distance (11 of 32), while West Virginia shot 42.4% (36 of 85) overall and 29.2% (7 of 24) from 3. WVU missed its first eight 3-point attempts of the first half before McBride's half-court shot at the buzzer tied the game at 31.
West Virginia was looking to become the first Mountaineer team since 2016 to win three consecutive games over nationally ranked teams.
"We've just got to start all over again, I guess," Huggins said.
Oklahoma has now won four straight and five out of the last six against West Virginia dating back to 2019. It's the third time the Sooners have swept the season series against the Mountaineers since West Virginia joined the Big 12 in 2013.
All three of the Mountaineers' home losses this year have been down-to-the-wire affairs against Texas, Florida and now Oklahoma.
West Virginia will have some extra time to think about this one because both games against No. 2 Baylor next week have been postponed because of COVID-19 issues within the Bears' program.
WVU was supposed to play Baylor in back-to-back games on Feb. 15 in Morgantown and then on Feb. 18 in Waco. West Virginia's next scheduled game is at No. 13 Texas next Saturday afternoon on ABC.
The Longhorns defeated the Mountaineers 72-70 on Jan. 9 at the Coliseum on an Andrew Jones 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds left.
