Box Score Leddie Brown ran for 111 yards and scored three touchdowns, and the Mountaineer defense came up with three big turnovers to defeat TCU 29-17 at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas, tonight.
Brown's three rushing touchdowns were the most by a West Virginia running back since Kennedy McKoy did it against Oklahoma in 2017.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak in Big 12 play and was also West Virginia's first true road victory since winning 20-17 at TCU to conclude the 2019 season.
"It was a great team win," West Virginia coach
Neal Brown said afterward. "I thought our staff handled the bye week in a positive manner. I'm proud of our players. I thought we played with a ton of energy tonight and it was a quality team win if you think about it offensively and defensively."
The Mountaineers (3-4, 1-3) have now won four straight against the Horned Frogs and have been victorious three times at Amon G. Carter Stadium since joining the Big 12 in 2012.
Tonight, it was West Virginia's defense that stepped up to hold down a TCU offense that was averaging 37.2 points and 460 yards per game. The Horned Frogs managed just 10 points from their offense with the other seven coming on the opening kickoff when Derius Davis returned
Evan Staley's kick 100 yards for a touchdown.
After that, WVU opted to go with pooch kicks from
Casey Legg, who also booted field goals of 27, 38 and 49 yards before seeing his consecutive field goal streak end at 13 when his fourth-quarter try from the 38 was blocked by Ochaun Mathis.
After the block, TCU (3-4, 1-3) took over at its own 14 with 5:39 remaining and trailing 29-17, but two plays later the Mountaineers got the football back when
Sean Mahone ripped the football out of Quentin Johnston's arms on a completed pass and
Charles Woods recovered it at the WVU 43.
"We knew coming into the game we had to produce more turnovers as a secondary," Woods said. "We had to find a way to get the ball back to the offense and find a way to win."
Woods, playing in place of injured cornerback
Nicktroy Fortune, also came up with a big interception early in the fourth quarter when he made an athletic play on Max Duggan's pass that was intended for Johnston. Woods returned the pick 32 yards to the TCU 15, setting up
Leddie Brown's third touchdown run from the 3.
Brown's other TD jaunts were a 5-yard run on West Virginia's second offensive possession of the game, and a 1-yard blast with 2:51 left in the second quarter to put WVU ahead 20-14.
Another big interception resulted in points in the third quarter when redshirt freshman corner
Daryl Porter Jr. jumped in front of a Duggan pass to the near side of the field at the TCU 15 and returned it 43 yards to the Horned Frog 42.
Not only did Porter's interception deny points for TCU, it also resulted in Legg's 49-yard field goal to put West Virginia ahead 23-17.
"Our defensive backs had three takeaways, limited big plays for the most part and I thought they played their best game of the season by far,"
Neal Brown said.
West Virginia's other major second-half defensive stop came with nine minutes left and TCU facing a fourth and 2 at the WVU 35. Linebacker
Josh Chandler-Semedo blew through to throw Zach Evans for a 5-yard loss back to the WVU 40.
Right before the end of the first half, West Virginia's strong defensive play influenced TCU coach Gary Patterson into kicking a field goal with 18 seconds left instead of going for it on fourth and goal at the 2.
Patterson initially opted to try and get seven points by lining up in a five-receiver set, forcing West Virginia to call timeout to readjust its scheme. When play resumed, Patterson instead brought out his field goal kicker Griffin Kell, who booted a 24-yarder to shrink West Virginia's lead to 20-17.

Chandler-Semedo once again led the WVU defense with 11 total tackles, nine of them solos. Senior defensive tackle
Dante Stills was also disruptive up front with four solo tackles, two tackles for loss and a seven-yard sack of Duggan.
Akheem Mesidor was credited with West Virginia's other sack.
Quarterback
Jarret Doege was an efficient 21-of-28 passing for 257 yards - six of his completions going to
Bryce Ford-Wheaton for 65 yards.
Sean Ryan caught four passes for 81 yards, including a 44-yarder on WVU's opening possession which led to Legg's first field goal.
West Virginia's other explosive play came from backup quarterback
Garrett Greene, who broke free at his own 12 and raced 67 yards down to the TCU 27-yard line. It was the longest scamper by a Mountaineer quarterback since a 69-yard run by Pat White against Syracuse during the 2006 season.
That was Greene's only offensive series of the game.
The Mountaineers' ground game accounted for 229 yards – their most since posting 329 yards against Eastern Kentucky in last year's season opener. And, West Virginia's 487 total yards were the second most this season behind the 542 it put up in a 66-0 win over Long Island.
"We knew coming into this game both teams were going to run the ball and the team that ran the ball better was going to win, so we knew we had to play more physical up front and in the backfield,"
Leddie Brown said.
"With our offensive line we were able to run for 229 yards and run four-plus minutes off the clock at the end of the game," Neal Brown added. "I'm proud of those guys."
Duggan, coming off a career high 346-yard passing performance last Saturday at Oklahoma, was 16-of-26 tonight for 244 yards with two interceptions and a 5-yard second quarter touchdown pass to Barber.
Quentin Johnson led all receivers with five catches for 113 yards.
TCU's 15
th-ranked rushing attack, averaging 227.5 yards per game, finished well below its season average with only 149 yards on 34 attempts.
"I thought we handled adversity, something we didn't do at Baylor," Brown said. "I never felt like we bounced back after the first two touchdown drives, but as a football team we handled adversity much, much better tonight."
West Virginia returns home to face surging Iowa State, which knocked off undefeated and eighth-ranked Oklahoma State 24-21 earlier today in Ames.
