EL PASO, Texas – West Virginia spotted Texas Western an early 6-0 lead, but roared back to score once before halftime and twice in the third period to defeat the Miners in the 1949 Sun Bowl.
The victory for Coach Dud DeGroot's scrappy team enabled West Virginia to keep its perfect record for bowl contests intact. Quarterback Jimmy Walthall, always cool and possessing sharp aim despite the Texas Western pass rush, completed seven of 16 passes for 122 yards to lead the winning attack.
The Mountaineers' first touchdown came late in the second period when Walthall hit Clarence Cox with a 25-yard scoring strike. The other two West Virginia touchdowns came on third-quarter drivers in which Walthall's passes paved the way. Jim Devonshire ran for both scores, one from nine yards and one from one yard. Devonshire and Jack Morton were the running stars who helped make Walthall's passing effective. The Mountaineers outgained Texas Western 305-300 in total offense while notching their third bowl win.
