
Mountaineer Summer League Update – July 31

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Members of the West Virginia University baseball team have scattered across the country to get back on the diamond this summer. From Florida to North Dakota and everywhere in between, take a look at how the Mountaineers have fared over the past few weeks.
Ryan Bergert | RHP | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (Northwoods League)
In five appearances, Bergert has compiled a 1-1 record with a 2.86 ERA in 22 innings pitched this summer. The Canton, Ohio, native has tallied 23 strikeouts and allowed just seven earned runs. He conceded three runs on three hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work in his last outing against the Green Bay Booyah on July 25, finishing with a no decision. Bergert, as well as Mountaineer teammates Jake Carr and Victor Scott, have been a key contributors to Fond du Lac's, first-place, 17-12 mark in the Wisconsin-Illinois (East) Region.
Alec Burns | INF | Green Bay Booyah (Northwoods League)
Burns has left the yard five times this summer, to go along with 16 RBIs and a .232 average. In 23 games played, the Amherst, New Hampshire, native has 19 hits in 82 at-bats. In addition to his five homers, which is tied for third-most in the Northwoods League, Burns also has tallied a pair of doubles and 10 runs scored in Green Bay.
Jake Carr | LHP | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (Northwoods League)
Carr is 1-1 with a 1.35 ERA in 20 innings pitched this summer. The St. Albans, West Virginia, native has K'ed 25 hitters, while only walking two batters and allowing three earned runs in his four appearances. On July 29, Carr earned the victory after tossing five shutout innings and striking out eight against the Green Bay Booyah.
Austin Davis | OF | Seminole City Snappers (Florida League)
After playing in the nationally-televised Collegiate Summer Baseball Invitational (CSBI) earlier this summer, Davis is hitting .298 in 19 games with the Snappers. The Orlando, Florida, native has 14 hits and 12 runs scored to go along with a pair of RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Davis has registered three multi-hit performances in his last five games, dating back to July 24.
Tyler DeMartino | OF | Sliders (NVTBL)
In 16 games played, DeMartino is hitting an impressive .378 with two home runs and nine RBIs this summer. The Potomac, Maryland, native has scored seven runs for the Sliders, while helping the club to the league championship game on Aug. 1. In the semifinals on July 30, DeMartino homered and drove in four runs en route to the victory.
Madison Jeffrey | RHP | Seminole City Snappers (Florida League)
Jeffrey is 0-1 with a 3.85 ERA in 7.0 innings so far this summer. He has allowed just four hits with nine strikeouts in seven total appearances. The Barboursville, West Virginia, native earned his lone save of the summer in a 5-3 win over the Sanford Mavericks on July 7, and most recently struck out a pair in an inning of relief on July 29, against the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs
Chris Klein | INF/OF | Seminole City Snappers (Florida League)
Klein has played in 17 games this summer, totaling 10 hits, four RBIs, four runs scored and two stolen bases. The Brooklyn, New York, native is hitting .286 in 35 at-bats. On July 22, Klein went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a win over the DeLand Suns.
Carter Lyles | RHP | Waterloo Bucks (Northwoods League)
Lyles has entered eight games in Waterloo this summer, tallying a total of 12.2 innings of work. He hasn't factored into a decision but holds a 3.55 ERA with 11 strikeouts and just five earned runs. The Danville, West Virginia, native tossed a clean inning in relief on July 28, against the Rochester Honkers, allowing a hit with a strikeout. The Bucks sit atop the Minnesota-Iowa Region standings with a 16-8 record.
Dominic Ragazzo | INF | Sliders (NVTBL)
Ragazzo is hitting .312 in 17 games played this summer. The Hockessin, Delaware, native has a homer, 11 RBIs and seven stolen bases, as well as an on-base percentage of .358 in 48 at-bats. He has played a big role in leading the Sliders a 13-6 record and trip to the league championship game.
Hunter Rosenbaum | RHP | Wisconsin Woodchucks (Northwoods League)
Rosenbaum has been busy on the mound this summer, entering in a WVU-high nine contests, most recently against the Rockford Rivets on July 30. In all, he holds a 2-1 record with a 5.23 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched. The Webster, Wisconsin, native has fanned 14 batters.
Victor Scott | OF | Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (Northwoods League)
In 29 games played this summer, Scott is batting .266 with four home runs, 12 RBIs, seven doubles and 22 runs scored. The speedy outfielder also has stolen 12 bases this month. The Powder Springs, Georgia, native hit homers in back-to-back contests on July 28-29, against the Green Bay Booyah.
Jimmy Starnes | RHP | Church Hill Patriots (Piedmont League)
Starnes has fired 17.2 innings on the mound this summer, earning an 0-1 record and 2.03 ERA. In four starts, he has 27 strikeouts, seven walks and just four earned runs allowed. The Richmond, Virginia, has at least four strikeouts in all five of his appearances, including a personal-best seven on June 29, against the Tuckahoe Tigers.
Tyler Strechay | RHP | Mandan Flickertails (Northwoods League)
In a team-high 26 innings of work this summer, Strechay holds a 1-2 record with a 3.12 ERA in Mandan. The right-hander from Collegeville, Pennsylvania, has 25 strikeouts and just four walks, while allowing nine earned runs. Strechay last pitched against the Bismarck Bull Moose on July 30, going four innings, and he has helped the Flickertails to a first-place mark of 19-10 in the North Dakota Region.
Tim Wynia | RHP | Sun Devils (5Tool League)
Wynia finished 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched this summer. The Plano, Texas, native allowed just 12 hits and struck out 35 with 16 walks. Wynia conceded just six runs during the summer season with the Sun Devils in the Texas-based 5Tool League.
Additionally, several newcomers to the 2021 squad also have been in action this summer, including Ben Abernathy (.250 average and 1.17 ERA for the Seminole City Loggerheads/Florida League), Braden Berry (six hits in 14 games for the Seminole City Loggerheads/Florida League), William Bean (nine RBIs for the Bunt Cakes/NVTBL), Nathan Blasick (Sarasota/Florida Gulf Coast League), Justin Clark (10 innings pitched for the Seminole City Loggerheads/Florida League), Ben Hampton (6.2 innings pitched for the Green Bay Booyah/Northwoods League), McGwire Holbrook (six RBIs for the Seminole City Loggerheads), Michael Kluska (.250 average for the Bears/Smokey Mountain Collegiate League) and Adam Tulloch (1-1 record with 17 strikeouts for the Tulsa Drillers/Texas Collegiate League).
