Norwood Becomes Fourth WVU Gridder to Ink NFL Free Agent Deal
April 27, 2020 08:31 AM | Football
The Valdosta, Georgia, resident announced on Twitter Sunday that he has signed with the Seattle Seahawks.
Norwood's outstanding senior season in 2019 came to a crashing end in the Kansas State victory when he injured his shoulder while making an interception. That injury forced him to miss the final two games of the season against Oklahoma State and TCU.
Before that, he took part in 64 total tackles, 2 ½ tackles for losses and seven pass breakups to earn All-Big 12 Second Team honors by the coaches.
He made a career-best 11 tackles against Kansas and then duplicated that three games later against Oklahoma, concluding a streak of four straight 10-plus-tackle games. He ranked among the Big 12's top 20 in tackles and passes defended.
Norwood, a Northwest Mississippi Community College transfer two years ago after beginning his college career at Ohio State, appeared in 22 games at corner and safety for the Mountaineers, making 20 starts. He produced 128 total tackles, 7 ½ tackles for losses, 19 pass breakups and an interception during that time.
Norwood's compelling personal story growing up in Valdosta was recently chronicled by CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd. You can read it here: https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/2020-nfl-draft-josh-norwood-aims-to-triumph-through-tragedy-as-he-reaches-for-his-nfl-dreams/
Norwood becomes the fourth Mountaineer player to ink a free agent deal and the sixth to hook up with an NFL organization so far.
Senior offensive tackle Colton McKivitz was taken in the fifth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon by the San Francisco 49ers, making it the second straight year the Mountaineers had an offensive tackle go in the draft.
Following the draft, cornerback Keith Washington II (Saints), cornerback Hakeem Bailey (Kansas City) and wide receiver George Campbell (New York Jets) landed free agent deals.
Kenny Robinson Jr., a two-year safety for the Mountaineers who departed last summer and played in the XFL earlier this spring, was taken one pick ahead of McKivitz in the fifth round by the Carolina Panthers.
Other WVU players who could potentially end up in NFL camps include defensive end Reuben Jones, running back Kennedy McKoy and long snapper Rex Sunahara.
