Mountaineers Finish Competition in Boston

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team competed at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University, on Friday night in Boston, Massachusetts.
Redshirt senior Candace Archer and redshirt sophomore Hayley Jackson paced the team on the first night of competition at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center. Archer notched a top-15 finish after taking 14th place in the 1,000-meter run, while Jackson earned a new career-best time in the women's mile and finished 15th overall in the event.
The day opened with the 3,000-meter run (unseeded) where a trio of Mountaineers competed. Redshirt junior Sarah Wills led the way for WVU, finishing in 14th place with a time of 9:54.77. Behind Wills were redshirt sophomore Marianne Abdalah in 43rd (10:11.21) and redshirt freshman Hannah Lipps in 48th (10:15.38).
Up next was the 800 meters, and redshirt freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden was the lone Mountaineer competitor. She crossed the finish line in 2:15.22 to finish 66th overall and second in her heat. Jackson then represented WVU in the mile, reaching a new career best in the event with a time of 4:39.80. Jackson's time currently ranks No. 2 in the Big 12 in the event and No. 24 in the NCAA. With the mark, Jackson sits just outside the all-time top-five in the mile in indoor track in program history.
Archer and classmate Olivia Hill raced in the 1,000-meter run. Archer led the way, finishing first in her heat after crossing the finish line in 2:50.55 to take 14th overall in a field of more than 100 athletes. With the time, Archer moves up to No. 4 in the Big 12 in the event this season. Hill followed in 52nd place, as she posted a time of 3:02.62 and finished fifth in her heat.
Finally, WVU closed the day on the track in the 3,000-meter run (seeded). Sophomore Samantha Hatcher posted a time of 9:51.14 to finish in 76th place overall. Freshman Ceili McCabe also competed in the 3,000 meters, running unattached and finishing 74th (9:50.20).
The Mountaineers were one of nearly 100 teams competing at the David Hemery Valentine Invite on Friday. A full list of teams competing in the meet can be found at GoTerriers.com.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Feb. 21, to cap the regular season at the Penn State Tune-Up in University Park, Pennsylvania. Action at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track begins at 2:30 p.m. ET.
