MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Reverend Dr. Marcus Mauney, a three-year letterman for coach Bobby Bowden in the early 1970s, died last Friday in Morgantown.
Mauney, a Shelby, North Carolina, native, was a backup tailback for the Mountaineers during their Peach Bowl season in 1972. He ran 43 times for 295 yards and two touchdowns that year before being switched to defense his junior season in 1973.
Mauney started five games at cornerback as a junior and was named to the weekly ECAC defensive all-star team after his 56-yard interception return helped seal WVU's 24-14 victory over Syracuse.
During his senior season, Mauney made a sensational 99-yard interception return during the final game of the season at Virginia Tech to help the Mountaineers earn a 22-21 victory in Blacksburg, Virginia, that Bowden later credited as saving his job.
Mauney, voted the team's best tackler heading into his senior season, recorded 104 total tackles with a team-best four interceptions to go with six pass breakups.
He was credited with 162 total tackles and eight interceptions during his junior and senior seasons.
Mauney, 67, was retired from the United Parcel Service and was living in Morgantown where he had his ministry.
