Mountaineers Kick-Off the 2021 Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team hosted wrestle-offs on Sunday, at the WVU Shell Building in Morgantown, to kick off the 2021 season.
WVU's grapplers competed in hard-fought battles throughout the day, with hopes of securing themselves a spot in third-year coach Tim Flynn's starting lineup.
Eight of West Virginia's true freshmen competed on Sunday afternoon. Additionally, the list of returnees included Joey Thomas (125), Lucas Seibert (133/141), Jeffrey Boyd (141), Seth Hogue (149), Luke Sorboro (157), Alex Hornfeck (157), Walker Heard (157), Patrick Daum (165), Scott Joll (174), Hunter DeLong (174), Anthony Carman (184), Jackson Moomau (184) and Michael Wolfgram (HWT). Transfer Killian Cardinale (125) and walk-on Tyler Mileto (HWT) also competed in today's event.
Peyton Hall (165), Cardinale, Hogue, Hornfeck, Joll and Carman each recorded a 2-0 record in their respective weight classes, while Seibert, Boyd and Wolfgram bested their opponents to claim the top spot in their respective brackets.
In addition, freshman Caleb Dowling (157) posted a 2-1 record on the day, while his teammates Dennis Robin (165), Jack Blumer (165), Thomas and DeLong each notched one win apiece to go 1-1 in their respective weight classes. Heard and Dowling split their head-to-head matches at 157 pounds, as Heard went 1-2 in the event.
Looking ahead, the 2021 regular season commences with three straight competitions at the WVU Coliseum, starting with a quad meet against Kent State, Ohio University and Virginia Tech on Sunday, Jan. 10. Action is set to begin at 12 p.m.
WVU Athletics continues to work with University, local and state authorities for the potential plan for fan attendance at the WVU Coliseum, which will be announced at a later date.
