MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University wrestling team wraps up a three-match road swing with a match against Oklahoma on Sunday, Jan. 19, in Norman, Oklahoma.
Action at McCasland Field House is slated to begin at 2 p.m. ET. The match is set to air on Fox Sports Oklahoma. Fans can also follow the match with live stats on TrackWrestling.com.
"Our guys have a great attitude and are looking forward to this match," WVU coach
Tim Flynn said. "Oklahoma presents another big test for us, with a lineup that has a lot of ranked guys, so we are looking forward to another opportunity to improve tomorrow."
Sunday's match marks the third Big 12 Conference road match of the season for the Mountaineers. WVU (3-7, 0-2 Big 12) trails Oklahoma (2-2, 0-1 Big 12), 8-2, in the all-time series. Last season, OU earned a 26-17 win over WVU in Norman, after the Mountaineers upset the then-ranked No. 18 Sooners in Morgantown in 2018.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 37-9 loss to No. 9 Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 17, at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Cowboys earned victories in the first eight matches of the night, before redshirt sophomore
Noah Adams claimed WVU's first win of the night, after pinning No. 10/8/14 Dakota Greer in 1:07 at 197. The win improved the Coal City, West Virginia, native's record to 23-0 on the year, and marked the seventh win over a ranked opponent this season. Senior
Brandon Ngati closed the night with another Mountaineer victory after he secured a takedown in the first overtime period to earn a 3-1 decision over Cornelius Putman.
Adams, the 2020 Southern Scuffle's Most Outstanding Wrestler, is ranked No. 2 by TrackWrestling in the 197-pound division, the highest a Mountaineer has ever been ranked in the poll that began in 2015. He also sits No. 2 in The Open Mat and Intermat rankings this week. Adams leads the squad in pins (five) and major decisions (six) and is in a three-way tie for the team lead with a pair of technical fall wins this season.
Additionally, junior
Nick Kiussis sits No. 27 in this week's TrackWrestling rankings at 165 pounds, while The Open Mat ranks him No. 33 in his class.
Oklahoma is led by fourth-year coach Lou Rosselli. The Sooners are 2-2 this season after earning a win, 35-6, win over Ohio on Jan. 5 in Athens, Ohio. Sunday's contest marks the second conference match of the campaign, after falling 23-9 to in-state rival Oklahoma State on Dec. 15.
Six OU wrestlers appear in various polls this week. Redshirt sophomore Dom Demas, the 2019 Big 12 Champion at 149, is 16-2 this season to lead the way for the Sooners. Demas is ranked No. 1 at 141 by the Open Mat, No. 4 by Intermat and No. 7 in the most recent TrackWrestling polls.
All eyes will be on the match at 197 as WVU's Adams looks to continue his winning streak against No. 13/11/17 Jake Woodley of Oklahoma. The pair met twice last season, with Woodley earning the decision in both matches.
Looking ahead, WVU will take two weeks off before hosting South Dakota State on Feb. 7 at the WVU Coliseum. The contest is slated to begin at 7 p.m. and will be the first home conference bout of the season for the Mountaineers.
The match against the Jackrabbits will be the WVU's annual Cradles for Cancer for breast cancer awareness. WVU Medicine will sponsor the match and will collect donations for the WVU Cancer Institute. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and can get the WVU sports official "pink" t-shirt with a donation of $10 or more to WVU Medicine. The contest against the Jackrabbits also is Senior Day, as WVU will celebrate the careers of its four seniors. The first 150 fans in attendance will receive a free Nike dri-fit t-shirt. Autographs also will take place following the match.
