CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team opened its fall season with an 8-7, extra-innings win over Marshall on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park in Charleston, West Virginia.
The Mountaineers trailed by as many as four runs early but rallied for two in the sixth, three more in the eighth and three in the 10th to earn the come-from-behind, exhibition victory.
Freshman infielder Tyler DeMartino led WVU in the win, finishing 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and two runs scored. The Potomac, Maryland, native registered a bases-clearing, three-run double in the top of the 10th to put the Mountaineers up for good.
Marshall plated three runs in the bottom of the first and added on with another run in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. From there, WVU cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth when freshman infielder Matt McCormick registered an RBI groundout before junior infielder Tyler Doanes hit a two-out, RBI double to make it 4-2.
From there, five Mountaineers relievers – freshman right-handers Tyler Stretchay, Tim Wynia, Jacob Watters and Carter Lyles and freshman left-hander Jake Carr – combined to toss six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit combined, from the third through the eighth.
In the top of the eighth, WVU gathered its first lead of the night when redshirt sophomore catcher Vince Ippoliti singled in a run before sophomore infielder Ryan Archibald doubled in the tying run. Then, Ippoliti scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
The Mountaineers led, 5-4, after eight frames.
The Thundering Herd tied the game with a run in the bottom of the ninth, sending the contest into extra innings. That's when WVU plated three on DeMartino's 10th-inning double.
With an 8-5 lead, freshman right-handed pitcher Daniel Batcher worked the bottom of the 10th, earning the save. Freshman righty Hunter Rosenbaum recorded the win.
WVU finished with eight runs on eight hits and committed two errors in the win. Marshall tallied seven runs on 10 hits.
Next up, the Mountaineers return to Morgantown to host Marshall on Friday, Oct. 4, at Monongalia County Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. ET, and admission is free for all fans.
