Mountaineers Open Conference Play Friday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer opens Big 12 play on Friday, Sept. 20, with a match against Iowa State in Morgantown. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Friday's match is Diversity and Inclusion Night, and fans are encouraged to wear their favorite international soccer team jersey to receive $3 admission. It is also Friday Night Happy Hour, with half-priced beverages available from 6-7 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com to avoid lines at the gate on game day. When purchasing online, tickets are $5 each and $3 for groups of 10 or more. All tickets are general admission.
At the stadium ticket window, tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups on game day. The discounted online pricing will be available until kickoff of the match.
WVU students are admitted for free with a valid WVU Student I.D.
"Iowa State has great athletes, they are organized and are lethal in the attack," WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "They can catch you off balance, so we have to be ready for a team that's looking for wins in conference play."
Since entering the Big 12 in 2012, WVU has won nine conference championships, including five regular-season championships and four Big 12 Conference Tournament Titles. The Mountaineers own a record of 49-4-4 (.895) in league play since joining the Big 12.
The Mountaineers enter the conference slate after capturing its fourth Big 12 Championship in 2018, with a 3-0 win over then-No. 9 Baylor on Nov. 4. WVU was selected to finish first in the Big 12 Soccer Preseason Poll, marking the seventh consecutive season that the Mountaineers were picked to finish first in the league.
Friday's match marks the eighth meeting between the Mountaineers and the Cyclones. WVU holds a 7-0 series advantage over ISU, including a 3-0 record in Morgantown. West Virginia has shut out Iowa State in six consecutive matches, while outscoring ISU, 20-2, in the previous seven matches.
The Mountaineers enter the contest with a 5-3-1 record after earning a pair of wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-0, on Sept. 20, and Bowling Green, 2-0, on Sept. 22, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Sophomore defender Jordan Brewster earned her first career game-winner with a penalty kick in the 12th minute against Fairleigh Dickinson, before sophomore midfielder Isabella Sibley doubled the Mountaineer lead in the 53rd minute with her second goal of the season to lead WVU to a 2-0 victory. Sophomore forward Alina Stahl tallied her first career brace against the Falcons, scoring the game-winner in the 2nd minute and adding an insurance goal in the 83rd minute. The WVU defense denied a goal in both matches over the weekend as the squad picked up its third and fourth clean sheets of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Rylee Foster added two clean sheets to her total last weekend, giving her 35 career shutouts. She is currently one shutout away from moving into a tie for second place for the most shutouts in program history. Foster is tied for second nationally amongst active players with 6,575:35 minute played in her career. She also places No. 3 and No. 4 in career shutouts (35) and goals against average (0.63) in the country, respectively. Freshman forward Julianne Vallerand leads the Mountaineers with 11 points (5 G, 1 A) in 2019, while Stahl ranks second with seven points (3 G, 1 A).
West Virginia ranks No. 10 nationally and leads the Big 12 Conference with 7.33 corner kicks per game this season. WVU also has outscored opponents, 18-12, this season, while holding a 146-69 advantage in shots over its counterparts. The Mountaineers have shined in the final 45 minutes of play this season, edging opponents 13-4 in goals and 79-29 in shots in the second half.
Iowa State enters the Big 12 opener with a 3-6 record after falling to No. 11 Memphis, 3-0, on Sept. 20. Freshman midfielder Mira Emma paces the Cyclones offensively with five points (2 G, 1 A), this season. Junior Dayja Schwichtenberg has played all nine matches between the posts and shows a 1.44 GAA. Schwichtenberg and the Cyclone defense have registered two clean sheets this season. ISU has been outscored 13-6 and outshot 139-97 this season.
Tony Minatta is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Cyclones. He has an overall record of 33-63-6 at Iowa State, including a 7-32-4 record in Big 12 play.
