United Bank Playbook - Bye Week Work

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – There may not be a football game this weekend, but that doesn't mean the work stops over at the Milan Puskar Center.
West Virginia University coach Neal Brown detailed this week's plan of attack for his 3-1 Mountaineers during his weekly United Bank Playbook piece with our Tony Caridi.
"Two different plans," Brown said. "We've got a plan for the guys that have been playing in the games and that plan is to continue staying in shape, staying sharp and improving in areas we know we have to improve."
He continued, "Offensively, that's explosive plays, especially downfield throws. Defensively, it's really about end-of-game, end-of-half scenarios. We've got to get better at those two scenarios. And then also on third and long – we didn't play that as well against Kansas as we need to."
The second area Brown will focus on is his developmental squad, or the future of Mountaineer football.
"Our development guys are guys that maybe are not playing as many snaps, older guys or younger who aren't playing as many snaps on Saturday, but have a real future or guys that are redshirting," he explained. "We will use this week and we'll hold those guys out for another 30, 40 minutes and we will do scrimmage activities. We won't full tackle but we'll do red zone, we'll do coming off and some 11-on-11 work where we really emphasize they're development."
Among the young players Brown wants to take a closer look at are freshman offensive linemen Parker Moore and Brandon Yates, true freshman defensive lineman Jalen Thornton and freshman corners Tacorey Turner and Tae Mayo, as well as New Hampshire transfer Alonzo Addae.
"Kids like that, who are not playing on Saturdays, who are going to be instrumental pieces to our program moving forward, they're going to get a lot of work this week," Brown concluded.
Next Saturday's Texas game, to kick off at 3:30 p.m., has already been announced a sellout but tickets still remain for West Virginia's three remaining home dates against Iowa State on Oct. 12, against Texas Tech on Nov. 9 and against Oklahoma State on Nov. 23.
