MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Freshman forward Rodrigo Robles Grajera of the No. 24-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Robles Grajera scored two goals in the Mountaineers' 5-2 win over No. 15/16 Coastal Carolina on Sept. 13, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Burgos, Spain, native came on as a sub and found the back of the net twice in a 32-second span to help WVU gain the lead and eventual top-25 victory.
The freshman's first goal of the night marked the first of his Mountaineer career. He scored off a Coastal Carolina turnover to tie the match at 1-1 in the 37th minute. Moments later, Robles Grajera, who was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday, headed in his second goal, off a cross into the box from freshman midfielder Luke McCormick.
The honor is the first in Robles Grajera's career and the first conference accolade for the Mountaineers this season. Through five games, Robles Grajera co-leads WVU in points, with five, good for No. 6 in the MAC.
Earlier in the week, Robles Grajera and the Mountaineers earned a 0-0 draw against No. 12 Charlotte on Sept. 10, in Morgantown.
WVU (3-1-1) returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Cincinnati. Kickoff at the Bearcats' Gettler Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.
