No. 23 WVU Faces Familiar Foe

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 23-ranked West Virginia University women's soccer team faces its fourth-ranked opponent of the season as it travels to the nation's capital to take on former Big East foe No. 15 Georgetown on Sunday, Sept. 15. Kickoff at Shaw Field in Washington D.C. is set for 1 p.m. ET.

"We have another great opportunity this week to compete against a top-15 opponent in Georgetown," Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "Georgetown is really tough to beat at home so we know that we have to be super focused and execute our game plan to pull off the upset on their field."
WVU enters Sunday's match with a 3-2-1 record in 2019 after the Mountaineers powered past Stony Brook, 6-1, on Thursday. Nicole Payne and Julianne Vallerand became the first pair of freshmen in program history to score two goals in the same match in the win over the Seawolves. Sophomore Lizzie Mayfield also became the first Mountaineer to register two assists in a match this season and the first since Jordan Brewster recorded two helpers against Radford on Nov. 10, 2018.
Vallerand paces the Mountaineer offense with 11 points on five goals and an assist on the season. Payne has netted three goals this season to place second on the team. The Mountaineers have registered 92 shots, while holding opponents to 42 shots through the first six games of the 2019 campaign. WVU also leads opponents 37-24 in shots on goal and 45-12 in corner kicks.
The Hoyas are 4-2-1 on the year after defeating Princeton, 4-3, in overtime on Thursday. Senior forward Paula Germino-Watnick paces the Hoyas with seven points (three assists, two goals) in 2019. Amanda Carolan leads Georgetown with three goals, including two game-winners on the year.
Sunday's match marks the 23rd meeting between the former Big East foes, with the Mountaineers holding a 15-5-2 advantage over the Hoyas. WVU holds an 8-2 edge over Georgetown in Washington D.C.
