MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Austin Kendall threw two touchdown passes and West Virginia's first-time interior offensive line starters are holding up well in the first half of today's game against undefeated NC State.
The two teams are deadlocked at 21 at the break.
Kendall fired touchdown passes of 20 yards to freshman Sam James and 13 yards to George Campbell while Kennedy McKoy crossed the goal line from 23 yards out.
WVU ran the ball nine times for 65 yards in the first half, or one yard more than it gained in its first two games of the season against James Madison and Missouri.
First time starters Briason Mays at center, and guards John Hughes and James Gmiter really held their own in place of last week's starters Chase Behrndt, Josh Sills and Michael Brown.
Consequently, Kendall has had enough space to complete 17-of-22 passes for 173 yards, six of those going to James for 114 yards.
NC State's first half scoring came on two touchdown passes, one from quarterback Matthew McKay and the other on a trick-play double pass from wide receiver Thayer Thomas to tight end Cary Angeline.
The Wolfpack's other first-half score came on Jordan Houston's 1-yard run. Two of NC State's three first-half scoring drives were aided by personal foul penalties called on the Mountaineer defense.
WVU was flagged seven times for 55 yards.
McKay has completed 14-of-24 passes for 135 yards and the Wolfpack accumulated 119 yards on 22 attempts on the ground.
West Virginia won the toss and deferred the kickoff until the second half.
More details to come.
