"This is a great opportunity and another great opponent," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "(Coastal Carolina coach) Shaun (Docking) does a great job year-in and year-out with his teams, and this team may be his best yet. They've had a full week to prepare, while we had the mid-week game and less time to recover. However, that doesn't matter – we need to recover and find a way to perform regardless of the circumstances. We've got our work cut out for us with one of the best teams in America coming to Morgantown."
Friday's contest marks the fifth meeting between West Virginia and Coastal Carolina but the first since 1994. The Mountaineers lead the all-time series, 2-1-1. WVU last topped the Chanticleers, 3-0, on Oct. 1, 1994, in Conway, South Carolina.
The Mountaineers (2-1-1) are coming off a 0-0 draw to No. 12/15 Charlotte on Sept. 10, in Morgantown. WVU tallied 16 shots on the night and held a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal but couldn't find the back of the net in the top-25 clash. The 49ers were issued three red cards on the night, two late in the second half before a third was issued to the Charlotte bench before the start of overtime.
Senior defender Albert Andres-Llop led WVU with a team-high seven shots against Charlotte, including one on goal, while junior goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made two saves in his second clean sheet of the season.
Friday marks the first time WVU has played back-to-back ranked opponents since Aug. 26-28, 2016, when the Mountaineers fell to then-No. 7 Seattle, 2-0, before defeating then-No. 9 Georgetown, 1-0, in Akron, Ohio. The Mountaineers have defeated at least one top-25 opponent in 11 of the last 13 years under LeBlanc.
Tekesky enters the contest tied for No. 1 in the Mid-American Conference in minutes played (380) and shutouts per game (.500), No. 2 in save percentage (.857) and No. 3 in saves per game (3). Andres-Llop (3.25) and senior midfielder Andres Muriel Albino (2.75) rank No. 3 and No. 4, respectively in the MAC in shots per game.
As a team, West Virginia sits No. 1 in the conference in shots, with 63, an average of 15.8 per match.
On Monday, the Mountaineers were slotted No. 25 in the latest College Soccer News Top 30. The squad also is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll this week.
Coastal Carolina is led by 22nd-year coach Shaun Docking, who holds a record of 278-126-35 with the Chanticleers. Docking has won eight Coach of the Year honors, including being named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year in 2017.
CCU is 2-1 to start the 2019 campaign, earning season-opening wins at Oregon State (2-1) on Aug. 30, and at Portland (1-0) on Sept. 1. Last time out, the Chanticleers fell to Charlotte, 2-1, in double overtime on Sept. 6.
Coastal Carolina, which made the NCAA Tournament each year from 2011-17, was picked to win the Sun Belt in the conference's preseason poll. The squad is ranked No. 15 nationally in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll, as well as No. 16 in the College Soccer News poll and No. 24 by Soccer America.
Four different players have contributed to CCU's four goals so far this season. Junior midfielder DZ Harmon paced the Chanticleers in assists, with two, while redshirt junior midfielder Tyrone Mondi leads the team in shots (9) and shots on goal (4). Additionally, senior goalkeeper Alberto Ciroi has tallied 14 saves on the year.
