WVU Opens Preseason with Virginia Tech

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 20/23-ranked West Virginia University men's soccer team opens preseason action by hosting Virginia Tech, on Friday, Aug. 16. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 4 p.m. ET.
Parking and admission to the contest are free for all fans.
Friday marks the first of three exhibition matches for the Mountaineers leading up to the 2019 season opener at Monmouth on Aug. 30. WVU opened preseason training on Tuesday under the direction of 14th-year coach and 2018 MAC Coach of the Year Marlon LeBlanc.
The Mountaineers return following a 14-7-0 campaign in 2018, including a perfect 5-0 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The reigning MAC regular-season champions advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round a year ago and return nine players who started at least 15 matches last fall, as well as 29 of its 41 goals scored.
Virginia Tech, which is led by 11th-year coach Mike Brizendine, enters the preseason slotted No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Ranking. The Hokies finished 11-7-3 last season and reached the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
Following Friday's preseason matchup, WVU will hold its annual Gold/Blue Instrasquad on Monday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers' preseason finale is set for Aug. 24, at Mount St. Mary's. Kickoff at Waldron Family Stadium in Emmitsburg, Maryland, is slated for 2 p.m.
