MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Vanessa Flores, a former member of the West Virginia University women's soccer team, has signed a contract to play professionally with Tigres UANL Femenil, a member of Liga MX, the top tier of the Mexican women's soccer league.
"I am very excited Vanessa is continuing her professional career with such a successful team in Tigres," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "She is going to make an incredible professional, and to play in the Mexican professional league will only help continue her career with the full Mexican national team."
A native of Baytown, Texas, Flores started all 23 matches in 2018 and finished her Mountaineer career with six points (1 G, 4 A). She served as a team captain during her senior season and ranked third on the team in minutes played with 2,132. In 2017, Flores tallied the game-winning goal in the Mountaineers' 1-0 victory at No. 14 Princeton, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
A United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team honoree in 2017, Flores was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team in 2017 and 2018. Flores previously competed on the world stage at the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup as a member of the Mexican U-20 Women's National Team.
Flores, who graduated in May with an exercise physiology degree, was named to the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team and was a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree. She was also a member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll, President's List and Dean's List.
Flores is the fifth senior from the 2018 Mountaineer squad to sign a professional contract. In her 23 years with the women's soccer program, Izzo-Brown has now coached 26 players who have gone on to play professional soccer.
