
Trio Advances to Knockout Stage

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On to the Round of 16!
Three former West Virginia University women's soccer All-Americans will continue their journeys at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup, as Canada and Cameroon advanced out of Group E and into the knockout stage of the tournament.
Following a 2-1 loss to Netherlands on June 20, Canada, led by defenders Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence, advances as the group's second-place team. Canada will face Sweden on Monday, June 24, at Parc des Princes in Paris, at 3 p.m. ET on FS1.
Canada (2-1) fell behind to the Netherlands in the 54th minute but quickly evened the score at 1-1 in the 60th minute off a goal by Christine Sinclair. Lawrence assisted on the goal, as her cross was met by Sinclair at the back post. Netherlands earned the game-winner in the 75th minute.
Lawrence and Buchanan played the full 90 minutes, and Buchanan was flagged with a yellow card.
Cameroon (1-2) earned its first win of the tournament with a 2-1 victory over New Zealand on June 20, clinching third place in Group E. Needing a victory to advance, Cameroon's game-winner came in extra time late in the match.
Midfielder/forward Michaela Abam earned her second consecutive start and registered two shots in 90 minutes of action.
Cameroon will kick against England on Sunday, June 23, at 11:30 a.m. ET, at Stade du Hainaut in Valenciennes, France. The match will be broadcast on FS1.
Quarterfinal matches will be played June 27-29, and the semifinals will follow July 2-4. The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup France Final will be held Sunday, July 7, at Stade de Lyon in Lyon, France.
