MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nine grapplers from the West Virginia University wrestling team will represent the West Virginia Regional Training Center at the U23 National Freestyle Tournament in Akron, Ohio, from June 1-2.
"I'm very excited to see these guys compete on the mat," said first-year coach Tim Flynn. "We have been training for a while now, and they need the competition."
Rising sophomores Caleb Rea and Luke Martin will wrestle at 65 kilograms (kg), while rising senior Seth Hogue, rising junior Kyler Rea and rising sophomore Alex Hornfeck set to compete at 70 kg.
Additionally, rising sophomore Luke Sorboro will take on the 74-kg division, while classmate Tucker Nadeau sets to compete in the next weight class at 79 kg. Rising sophomore Sean Mullican will square off at 97 kg, while rising senior Brandon Ngati goes head-to-head in the 125-kg division.
Nagti, who received this year's Most Improved Wrestler Award, more than tripled his career-win total, placing sixth in the heavyweight division at the 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championship to capture an automatic bid to Nationals for the first time in his career.
Additionally, C. Rea and Martin each saw action in their first season of competition at 141 pounds, with Rea claiming a sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship. Nadeau also stepped up in his first season, as he competed at this year's conference championship in the 184-pound division, two weight classes higher than his original weight.
Of note, Hogue and Hornfeck are coming off a redshirt season. Hornfeck led the unattached wrestlers with 19 victories, followed by Hogue with 12.
