MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University women's soccer alums Kadeisha Buchanan and Ashley Lawrence were named to the Canadian Women's National Team and will compete in the upcoming 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.
The pair will make their second career World Cup appearances, having helped Canada advance to the quarterfinals at the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. At the tournament's end, Buchanan was bestowed the Hyundai Young Player Award. One year later, the duo helped Canada claim Bronze at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic Games.
The 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup will take place June 7 – July 7 in France.
"A second opportunity for Kadeisha and Ashley to represent their country on the sport's biggest stage speaks to their talent and hard work," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We're so proud of them, and I know all of Mountaineer Nation will be cheering for them."
A member of Group E, Canada opens the World Cup against Cameroon, and fellow WVU alum Michaela Abam, on June 10, before facing New Zealand on June 15 and Netherland on June 20.
Of note, former Mountaineer Easther Mayi Kith is no longer on the Cameroon roster.
"Having three Mountaineers on the field for that first game on June 10 makes this moment even more special," Izzo-Brown added. "I know these teammates will bring the best out of each other."
Buchanan, the 2016 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy winner, will play center back for Canada. A Brampton, Ontario, native, Buchanan recently helped Olympique Lyonnais capture its fourth consecutive and sixth overall Women's Champions League trophy.
The most decorated player in Mountaineer history, Buchanan also was named the espnW and TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year in 2016 and was the Honda Sport Winner for soccer. The five-time All-American was named the 2016 NCAA College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense and was the first four-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in conference history.
Lawrence, a Toronto native, will play outside back for Canada. Currently playing professionally for Paris Saint-Germain, the three-time All-American was a two-time semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy while playing forward for the Mountaineers.
Buchanan and Lawrence helped WVU win seven Big 12 Conference titles during their four-year career (2013-16). They led WVU to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in the 2016 NCAA College Cup Final.
