WVU Fifth After Day One in Louisville

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Led by sophomore Logan Perkins, the West Virginia University golf team sits in fifth place after the first day of play at the NCAA Louisville Regional, hosted at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, on Monday.
The Mountaineers shot two-over par as a team with a 286. Auburn is atop the team leaderboard at eight under par, while Oklahoma State is in second place at six under. Baylor and Louisville are tied for third at four-under par.
Perkins shot a one-under-par 70 in the first round to lead the Mountaineers. He scored a birdie and a bogey on the front nine to enter the turn at even par. He went on to add two more birdies on the back nine before bogeying No. 18. He sits tied for 11th place in the standings.
Junior Philipp Matlari shot even-par with a 71. He birdied three holes on the front nine but bogeyed three as well to sit even-par at the turn. Matlari birdied No. 11 but had back-to-back bogeys before adding a birdie on No. 17. He is tied for 16th place.
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene carded a 72 to end the round at one-over par and in a tie for 26th place. After registering a double-bogey on No. 4, he notched a pair of birdies to make the turn at even par. Sharpstene added another birdie on the back nine but had two bogeys to shoot one over.
Junior Etienne Papineau had a pair of birdies on the front nine but had four bogeys across the round to shoot two-over par. He sits tied for 35th place after carding a 73.
Senior Max Sear bogeyed a trio of holes on the front nine to make the turn at plus three. He added two more bogeys but birdied two of the last four holes to finish at three-over par with a 74. Sear is tied for 44th place overall.
West Virginia is paired with Baylor and Arizona for tomorrow's round. The Mountaineers will go off hole No. 10 in tee times starting at 8 a.m.
