SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Solid play by senior Max Sear and a stellar ending by junior Etienne Papineau led the way for the West Virginia University golf team as the Mountaineers capped day two of the NCAA Louisville Regional at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers slipped from fifth place to eighth place after the second round of play, shooting a team score of 593 for nine-over par. WVU's two-round total of 286-293=579 is 11 over. No. 11 Auburn leads the field at 15-under par, followed by Oklahoma State in second at seven under. No. 25 Baylor is even par through two rounds.
Sear bounced back from Monday's early struggles with a pair of birdies on Tuesday. Balanced by a trio of bogeys, he finished the round at one-over par with a 72. His score moves him into a tie for 37th place with a four-over-par total of 74-72=146.
After recording a pair of early bogeys and two double-bogeys, Papineau found himself six-over-par through 10 holes. He then birdied three of the remaining six holes to finish the day at three-over par. His 36-hole total of 73-74=147 puts him at five-over par and in a tie for 41st place.
Sophomore Logan Perkins led the squad on Monday at one-under par but struggled on Monday and finished with a three-over-par 74. He tallied five birdies on the day, but also had six bogeys and a double-bogey. He sits two over through two rounds and is tied for 24th place with a score of 70-74=144 for two over.
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene birdied No. 5 but registered three bogeys as he carded a two-over-par 73 on the day. His 36-hole total of 72-73=145 has him tied for 28th place at three over.
Junior Philipp Matlari is tied with Papineau in 41st place with a two-round tally of 147 for five-over par. After shooting even-par with a 71 in the first round, Matlari shot a five-over par 76 in the second.
The Mountaineers are paired with Arizona and Arkansas State for the third and final round on Wednesday. Matlari is the first off the tee, going off No. 1 at 8:25 a.m.
The top five teams, as well as the top individuals not on advancing teams, will advance to the 2019 NCAA Golf Championship in Arkansas.
