WVU Set for Louisville Regional

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (May 12, 2019) – The West Virginia University golf team will make its first NCAA appearance in more than 70 years this week when the Mountaineers compete in the Louisville Regional at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, from May 13-15.
The Mountaineers enter the tournament as the No. 8 seed. It marks the first NCAA appearance for the program since it was reinstated in 2015-16 and the first overall since 1947.
They're joined by Big 12 foe and No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 2 seed Auburn, No. 3 seed North Florida, No. 4 seed Louisville, No. 5 seed Baylor, No. 6 seed Arkansas State, No. 7 seed Iowa State, No. 9 seed Arizona, No. 10 seed Mississippi State, No. 11 seed New Mexico, No. 12 seed Jacksonville State and No. 13 seed Southern Illinois.
Sophomore Matthew Sharpstene, senior Max Sear, junior Etienne Papineau, sophomore Logan Perkins and junior Philipp Matlari make up the West Virginia lineup. Sophomore Mark Goetz will serve as the alternate.
Golfers will play 18 holes each day on the par-71, 7,217-yard course. WVU is paired with Iowa State and Arizona for the first round in tee times starting at 8:25 a.m., when Matlari will tee off hole No. 1. He's followed by Perkins at 8:36 a.m., Papineau at 8:47, Sear at 8:58 and Sharpstene at 9:09. Teams will be re-paired according to score following each round.
Sharpstene, who took 13th place at the 2019 Big 12 Championship at The Greenbrier, currently leads the squad with a 70.63 scoring average and four-top 10 finishes on the season. Sear ranks second with a scoring average of 71.70 and claimed medalist honors at The Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational back in October. Papineau averages 71.97 with a trio of top-10 finishes on the year.
Six 54-hole NCAA regional tournaments will be conducted from May 13-15. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individuals not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
NCAA team and individual medalist titles will be decided from May 24-29, at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
