Mountaineers Sixth at NCAA Louisville Regional

SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – Two strokes came between the West Virginia University golf team and a bid to the National Championship as the eighth-seeded Mountaineers took sixth place at the NCAA Louisville Regional, held at the University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Kentucky, on Wednesday.
WVU shot one-under par in the final round, shooting a 283 as a team to finish the tournament at 10-under par with a 54-hole total of 286-293-283=862. No. 1 Oklahoma State shot 14-under par to take top honors at the regional and will be joined in Arkansas by No. 11 Auburn (-10), No. 25 Baylor (-7), No. 21 Louisville (+7) and No. 13 North Florida, who finished two strokes ahead of WVU at eight-over par.
Sophomores Matthew Sharpstene and Logan Perkins tied for 22nd place with matching scores of 215 for two-over par. Sharpstene, who previously shot 72-73, carded and eagle on No. 4 before adding a birdie on No. 4 to make the turn at three-under par. Despite some struggles on the back nine, he came through with three birdies to post West Virginia's best score of the day with a one-under-par 71. Perkins birdied five holes to finish the round even par with for a three-day score of 70-74-71.
Senior Max Sear used a trio of birdies on the front nine and another on No. 13 to finish even-par in the final round of his collegiate career. He capped the event with a 54-hole total of 74-72-71=217, shooting four-over par to tie for 29th place.
Junior Philipp Matlari birdied a trio of holes on the front nine, making the turn at two-under par following a bogey on No. 9. He added two more on the back nine, but a double-bogey on No. 18 moved him to even par with a 71. Matlari capped the event with a three-round tally of 71-76-71=218, tying for 35th place at five over.
Junior Etienne Papineau finished seven-over par with a 220 to take 44th place. He birdied a pair of holes in the final round to shoot two-over par, finishing with scores of 73-74-73.
The 2019 season marked just the fourth as a varsity sport for the Mountaineers, who reintroduced the program in 2013 and started competition in 2015-16. This week was the first NCAA appearance of the new era, and the first since 1972.
