MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team opened its home spring schedule with a 2-1 loss to Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers took an early lead just three minutes into the match when freshman Gabby Robinson jumped on a loose ball in front of the goal, which was sent in by freshman forward Lizzie Mayfield. Robinson scored from close distance to give WVU a 1-0 advantage.
However, Georgetown responded with a pair of second-half goals. First, the Hoyas tied the match at 1-1 in the 61st minute before taking the lead with a goal off a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
"Obviously, we have all the respect in the world for Georgetown," WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "They were really dynamic in the attack. I thought we were able to do some things that we set out to do, and this was a great opportunity for us to get better, especially with us having such a young team."
Georgetown held a 6-2 advantage in shots on-goal and edged the Mountaineers in corner kicks, 8-6. Junior goalkeeper Rylee Foster made four saves for West Virginia, two in each half.
Sunday also was a Pink Match, and the Mountaineers auctioned one game-worn pink jersey, with proceeds going to the WVU Cancer Institute. WVU auctioned six jerseys in February and raised $2,100.
Next up, West Virginia continues its spring slate when it hosts Virginia on Sunday, April 14. The contest is set to begin at 12 p.m., at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown.
