WVU Tallies Four Wins at Virginia
April 06, 2019 06:39 PM | Track & Field
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team earned four wins at a four-team meet at Virginia, on Saturday afternoon, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson won a pair of events, while redshirt senior Madelin Gardner and redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie also secured victories for the Mountaineers against Maryland, Pitt and the host Cavaliers. In all, WVU competed in 11 events on the day, registering a total of eight top-three finishes at Virginia's Lannigan Field.
Jackson began her afternoon with a win in the 3,000 meters in a time of 9:45.37, finishing ahead of redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer, who tallied a career-best 9:49.06 in a second-place performance. Then, Jackson completed the double with a win in the 800 meters in 2:10.68.
Dowie won the 2,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 6:54.92, while freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden (6:59.74) followed close behind in second. Later, Gardner ended the meet on a high note with her win in the pole vault. The three-time All-American jumped an outdoor season-best 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches) in the victory.
"Maddy led the charge for us again today," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "It's nice to see her pick up from where she was at indoors. On her final attempt, she was actually jumping at what would've been a school record. It's nice to see Maddy in a good place as we get ready for the remainder of the season.
"I thought the middle-distance and distance runners also had a nice day. We went out and ran very strong in the steeplechase, and Hayley had a very strong day running with Tig (Archer). Tig ran a big personal best today (in the 3,000) and had the lead going into the last corner, before Hayley took over. What we really wanted to work on with Hayley was her running an 800 while being tired, and she did that. We've gotten her out of her comfort zone the last few weeks, but it's to put her in position to where she'll be really sharp for the 1,500 by the year's end."
Sophomore Michaela Ashford got the day started with a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.35 meters (17 feet, 6.75 inches). Ashford also competed in the 100 meters, finishing sixth in 12.85.
Freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie also competed in a pair of events on Saturday. First, she took sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.60, before she finished fifth in the 200 meters (25.29).
A trio of Mountaineers ran in the 1,500 meters, led by redshirt junior Candace Jones. The Bristow, Virginia, native earned a second-place finish in 4:29.37, just in front of redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills (4:39.41) and freshman Linda Jebet (4:54.46), who took fourth and 11th, respectively.
"Candace had a really nice day in the 1,500," Cleary said. "Tactically, she might've let herself out of the race for a little while, but she did a good job coming home."
WVU registered another second-place finish in the high jump, courtesy of redshirt junior Faith Penny. Penny returned to action with a mark of 1.66 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches).
Along with Madelin Gardner, sophomore Ellie Gardner placed fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.60 meters (11 feet, 9.75 inches). Freshmen Molly DeBone and Audrey Schlosser tied for fifth place with a mark of 3.45 meters (11 feet, 3.75 inches), while freshman Julia Brundin finished seventh with a mark of 3.30 meters (10 feet, 10 inches).
Additionally, freshman Margaret Rymer competed in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 10th in 1:05.38.
Saturday marked the first of two visits to Charlottesville for the Mountaineers this season. WVU, which has now competed at Virginia eight times since 2014, is set to return to Lannigan Field for the Virginia Challenge, from April 19-20.
Up next, the Mountaineers travel to Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic, from April 13-14, in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The two-day meet is scheduled to commence on 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, with Sunday's action set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
