MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Madelin Gardner of the West Virginia University track and field team won the pole vault competition to open the Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
Gardner earned an outdoor season-best mark of 4.32 meters (14 feet, 2 inches) to earn the victory at Bucknell's Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. In all, the Mountaineers competed in four events on the opening day of the two-day meet.
Along with Gardner, sophomore Ellie Gardner and freshman Audrey Schlosser tied for 11th in the pole vault, earning marks of 3.57 meters (11 feet, 8.5 inches). Sophomore Mikayla Shute finished 21st with a jump of 3.27 meters (10 feet, 8.75 inches), while freshman Julia Brundin took 25th with a mark of 3.12 meters (10 feet, 2.75 inches).
"The vaulters had their best meet of the outdoor season," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Maddy was outstanding once again. Her confidence is rising as she readies for the last phase of the regular season."
In the high jump, redshirt junior Faith Penny registered a mark of 1.66 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches) to tie for sixth place.
On the track, redshirt junior Candace Jones placed seventh in the 1,500 meters invitational, crossing the finish line in a season-best 4:23.00. Freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden also competed in the event, taking 31st in 4:33.50.
In the 5,000 meters invitational, redshirt freshman Bree Warren placed 13th in a time of 17:03.92, while redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer finished 20th in 17:08.07. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills earned a 24th-place finish in 17:09.33.
Additionally, freshman Samantha Hatcher, who ran unattached, won the 1,500 meters (unseeded) in 4:34.93 to begin the day.
"The distance group had a very nice day," Cleary said. "It's rare that you leave a meet with every runner happy with their performance. Our 5,000 runners got themselves back on track, while the 1,500's saw big breakthrough results. Our hope is that Candace did enough to garner a spot at the NCAA regional with her three-second personal best."
The Mountaineers, who are competing at Bucknell for the fourth consecutive season, are among a large group of Division I schools attending the meet. WVU is joined joined by Bucknell, Buffalo, Cornell, Duquesne, George Washington, Lehigh, Maryland, Penn, Penn State, Pitt, St. Joseph's, Syracuse, Temple and several others.
Competition at the Bison Outdoor Classic concludes on Sunday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET. Fans can follow along with the Mountaineers via live results, presented by BucknellBison.com.
