MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team closed out its spring season on Saturday afternoon, as the Mountaineers defeated Maryland, 4-2, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers struck first in the 18th minute, as freshman forward Lizzie Mayfield scored from just outside the box to give WVU a 1-0 advantage.
Maryland responded in the 31st minute on a penalty kick, as the Mountaineers and Terrapins went into halftime with the score knotted up, 1-1.
After surrendering the penalty kick, WVU responded quickly to start the second half. Sophomore midfielder Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel led the charge for West Virginia, scoring goals in the 47th and 51st minutes to stretch the Mountaineers' lead to 3-1.
The Terrapins narrowed their deficit in the 67th minute, as Maryland shot inside the box, directing the ball past a diving junior goalkeeper Rylee Foster.
In the 78th minute, newcomer Jessica Lisi sent a ball into freshman forward Issy Sibley, who scored inside the box. The Mountaineers took a 4-2 lead and would coast to their second victory of the spring season.
"I thought we were resilient. Defensively, we gave up a few things, but ultimately, our goal was to be relentless in the box," WVU associate head coach Marisa Kanela said. "So, scoring four goals on a good quality Maryland team to finish out the spring was exciting to see. We created opportunities. We were able to get forward, but ultimately, the girls were able to put some things together on this field today that they were working on all spring long. They knew it was preparation for the fall, so hopefully they leave with some excitement and pure focus moving into the summer months."
West Virginia held the advantage in shots (13-12), shots on goal (7-5) and corner kicks (8-0) against Maryland, as Foster notched two saves.
Following the win, West Virginia has finished its spring season. The Mountaineers are scheduled to open the 2019 slate on Thursday, Aug. 22, as they host Duquesne for the season opener at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
