MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team returns to Morgantown to host the third annual Gold & Blue Regatta on Friday, April 19, on the Monongahela River.
The Mountaineers are set to launch from the WVU Boathouse in Morgantown's Wharf District at 7 a.m. ET, with races scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
"It is a fun event to get the team competing with one another in a unique way," said assistant coach Kayla Thieken. "One member from each team is designated as the coach, and they are in charge of lineups, launch time, race plan and so on. We put full responsibility on the athletes to take charge of their team and win their races. We are looking forward to a fun day of racing."
WVU is scheduled to compete in five events on Friday between the start line at the Westover Bridge and the finish line at the WVU Boathouse. West Virginia will begin Friday's races with a Marco/Polo 8 race, where four upper classmen and four newcomers in eight boats will compete. The Mountaineers' varsity four boats are set to race at 7:50 a.m., while the varsity eight boats will begin racing at 8:10 a.m.
Following the varsity four and eight races, West Virginia will finish the regatta with a class four race and a coxswain/rower four race. The class four race groups one rower from each class in a four boat. The coxswain/rower four race utilizes four coxswains as the rowers, while a rower coxes the boat.
If unfavorable weather should arise, the Mountaineers will relocate to the WVU Shell Building for their normally scheduled ERG workout. If conditions improve following the ERG workout, WVU will return to the Boathouse to complete the remaining races.
If the weather does not improve following the Mountaineers' ERG workout, WVU will remain in the Shell Building and compete in an indoor Gold & Blue Challenge. Spectators are welcome to come to the Shell Building to watch and cheer on the teams.
A recap of Friday's action will be available on WVUsports.com.
