MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Racing its way to three wins, the West Virginia University rowing Gold team defeated the Blue team, 800-500, on Friday morning, on the Monongahela River in Morgantown.
"It was an exciting day of racing on the Mon for the team," said assistant coach Kayla Thieken. "These have been the closest results we've had in the three years of doing the Gold and Blue Regatta. The athletes did a great job organizing their teams and putting out their fastest lineups. It was fun seeing the teams battle it out all the way to the line."
Kicking off the morning was the Marco/Polo 8 race, where four upper classmen and four newcomers in eight boats went head to head. Finishing within almost a second of each other, the Gold boat crossed the line finish line in 3:52.3 to best the Blue team (3:52.9) and claim 200 points.
The Blue team reclaimed the lead after winning the varsity four race, finishing in 4:17 and claiming 300 points. However, the Gold team rebounded quickly, winning the varsity eight race in 3:51 to take a 600-300 lead over the Blue team.
In the class four race, where one rower from each class competed in a four boat, the Blue team bested the Gold team (4:33), finishing the race in 4:22. Despite bagging a win in the class four race, the Blue team trailed the Gold team, 600-500, heading into the final event of the day.
With 200 points and a team victory on the line, the two teams squared off in the coxswain/rower four race to decide the winner. A close race ensued, but the Gold team edged the Blue team by three seconds, crossing the finish line in 2:33 to decide the 2019 Gold & Blue Regatta.
