2019 Men’s Soccer Schedule Unveiled
April 18, 2019 02:46 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Highlighted by nine home matches, West Virginia University Director of Athletics Shane Lyons has announced the 2019 men's soccer schedule.
With the Mountaineers coming off a conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2018, their 2019 schedule features 17 regular-season matches, nine at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The slate also begins with three exhibition contests, two at home.
"The 2019 schedule is loaded with quality opponents and games that will push this group to be at its best every time out," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "The non-conference schedule is clearly challenging, and we have our work cut out for us, at home and on the road. Our conference was the third-best conference in the country last year and has the potential to be even better this year. This is why our guys come to WVU, to play with and against the best competition in Division I men's college soccer."
Three of WVU's five Mid-American Conference matches will be at home, while the Mountaineers will play three 2018 NCAA Tournament teams, two in Morgantown. That includes a senior night matchup against Akron, the 2018 NCAA runner-up, on Nov. 8, and a contest against Charlotte on Sept. 10. West Virginia also faces North Carolina on the road on Oct. 8. Both Charlotte and UNC advanced to the 2018 NCAA Second Round.
The regular season begins at Monmouth on Aug. 30 and continues at Delaware on Sept. 2.
West Virginia commences the home slate with a three-match homestand, beginning on Sept. 7, against Wright State. In a matchup of 2018 NCAA Tournament Second Round teams, WVU hosts Charlotte on Sept. 10. The homestand concludes on Sept. 13, against Coastal Carolina. All three home matches will kick off at 7 p.m. ET.
The Mountaineers then travel to face Cincinnati on Sept. 17, before they return to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium for a contest against Dayton on Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. West Virginia then faces Ohio State on Sept. 24, in Columbus.
Four of WVU's next five matches are at home, beginning against Penn on Sept. 28 and San Diego on Oct. 4, both at home at 7 p.m. A trip to North Carolina follows on Oct. 8 before MAC play begins.
Western Michigan comes to Morgantown on Oct. 13 for a 1 p.m. contest, and West Virginia hosts Northern Illinois on Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers' longest roadtrip of the season also is their last, with a three-game trip that begins on Oct. 22 at non-conference foe American. WVU returns to conference action at Bowling Green on Oct. 26 and at SIU-Edwardsville on Nov. 2.
The regular-season finale is set for Nov. 8, with a senior night match against Akron. Kickoff against last year's NCAA runner-up is set for 7 p.m.
The 2019 season unofficially begins with three exhibition matches. Fans will get their first chance to see the Mountaineers on Aug. 12, at 7 p.m., with the annual Gold/Blue Intrasquad, while WVU hosts Virginia Tech on Aug. 16, at 4 p.m. The preseason wraps up on Aug. 24, at Mount St. Mary's.
Information about tickets for the 2019 campaign at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium will be announced at a later date.
West Virginia will return to the pitch in 2019 after a memorable 2018 campaign. WVU concluded the year ranked in the top 25 in each of the major poll's final rankings, coming in as high as No. 17 by Soccer America. The Mountaineers went 14-7-0 with a perfect 5-0-0 mark in MAC play to win the league's regular-season title. WVU was one of two teams nationally to go unbeaten and untied in conference play. The 14 wins were West Virginia's most since 2007 and one shy of the program record of 15, set in 2006.
For the 13th time in program history, the Mountaineers earned an NCAA Championship berth and advanced to the second round. The NCAA appearance was the fifth in LeBlanc's tenure, while WVU reached the second round for the seventh time and sixth since 2005.
