Schmitt Advances to Big 12 Semifinals

TULSA, Okla. – Redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt led the West Virginia University wrestling team in the first session of the 2019 Big 12 Wrestling Championship, as he advanced to the semifinals in his respective weight class on Saturday afternoon, at the BOK Center, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Schmitt, the No. 4 seed at 133 pounds, picked up a quick victory in the round of 16, winning by major decision over Northern Colorado's Sean Cannon. Schmitt held a 4-0 lead over Cannon after scoring a pair of takedowns in the first five minutes of action. He then elected to start the final frame on bottom, quickly earning an escape and posting a takedown, as well as four nearfall points for the 11-0 advantage. Schmitt continued to ride Cannon through the period, eventually adding on the riding time point for the 12-0 victory.
The Platte City, Missouri, native followed suit in the quarterfinal round, earning a 9-6 decision over No. 5-seed Cam Sykora of North Dakota State to advance to his second consecutive semifinal match at the conference tournament. Schmitt will face Oklahoma State's Daton Fix, who comes in as the No. 1 seed at 133 pounds, later this evening.
Redshirt freshman Noah Adams (197) and junior Brandon Ngati (HWT) also picked up wins in the round of 16 to start the first session, but later dropped hard-fought battles in the quarterfinals to fall in the consolation pool of their respective weight classes.
Of note, redshirt senior Christian Monserrat (149) and sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) each earned first-round byes at their respective weights, but they also suffered losses in the quarterfinals to fall in the consolation bracket with the remaining Mountaineers.
Additionally, redshirt junior Devin Brown (125), redshirt sophomore Kyler Rea (157) and freshmen Caleb Rea (141), James Wujek (174) and Tucker Nadeau (184) will be in action in the consolation bracket.
West Virginia is in 11th place with nine points. Oklahoma State leads the way with 65.5 points, followed by Iowa State with 48.5 points. Northern Iowa (35.5), Wyoming (31.5) and Fresno State (28.5) round out the top five.
