MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt freshman Katherine Dowie and freshman Mikenna Vanderheyden of the West Virginia University track and field team competed at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic, at Chabot College, in Hayward, California, on Thursday night.
Dowie earned a fifth-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:35.96, while Vanderheyden took 23rd place. The two Mountaineers competed in the event's first heat, where Dowie took fifth and Vanderheyden placed 16th.
In all, a total of 51 runners competed in the event.
"Katherine was quite impressive tonight," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Her collegiate debut in the steeple ends with her within eyesight of the NCAA regional mark. This will be a very strong place to build on."
Thursday marked the first time WVU has competed at the Fanelli Classic, formerly known as the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, since 2011. It also marked the start of West Virginia's four-meet, cross-country weekend. The Mountaineers also are scheduled to be represented at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California, on Friday, March 29, the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, March 30, and the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina, from March 29-30.
Action at the Raleigh Relays is set to commence at 9 a.m. on Friday, with Saturday's action set to begin at 9:30 a.m. At Stanford, redshirt junior Olivia Hill and redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson will compete, beginning on Friday at 9:30 p.m., while redshirt senior Madelin Gardner will compete at the Texas Relays on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. All times are Eastern.
Fans can follow along with the Mountaineers all weekend long via live results at NC State, Stanford and Texas. Additionally, FloTrack will provide a live stream of Stanford Invitational at flotrack.org, while coverage of the Texas Relays is courtesy of the Longhorn Network.
