WVU Begins Two-Day Meet in Raleigh

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team began competition at the Raleigh Relays, in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Friday.
The Mountaineers competed in six events on the opening day of the two-day meet at NC State's Paul Derr Track & Field Facility, including four events on the track.
Redshirt sophomore Antigone Archer opened the day with a personal-best time of 17:16.57 in the 5,000 meters, good for 14th place in her section. She finished in 56th place overall in a field that featured 125 runners.
Later, freshman Peter-Gay McKenzie placed 49th in the 100 meters in 12.75, ahead of sophomore Michaela Ashford, who placed 53rd in 12.85. Ashford also competed in the long jump competition on Friday, finishing 43rd with a mark of 4.80 meters (15 feet, 9 inches).
In the 400 meters, redshirt senior Bria Welker placed 14th with a time of 56.61, while freshman Linda Jebet took 73rd. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Wills also competed, taking 68th overall in the 1,500 meters after crossing the finish line in 4:35.88. The Morgantown native placed 35th in her section in an event that held 154 competitors.
Additionally, freshman Sada Wright competed in the discus throw, finishing in 28th place with a mark of 42.00 meters (137 feet, 9 inches).
The Mountaineers are joined by Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Michigan State, Mississippi State, NC State, Notre Dame, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and many others at one of the East Coast's largest outdoor collegiate meets.
West Virginia also is set to compete in the Stanford Invitational, in Stanford, California, late Friday. Redshirt junior Olivia Hill and redshirt freshman Hayley Jackson will represent the Gold and Blue in the West Coast competition at Stanford's Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Action at the Raleigh Relays resumes on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET. Elsewhere, redshirt senior Madelin Gardner is set to compete at the 92nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, in Austin, Texas, on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
Additionally, freshman Charlotte Wood will represent Team Canada in the women's U20 race at the 2019 International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF)/Mikkeller World Cross Country Championships in Aarhus, Denmark. Wood qualified for the event by finishing in sixth place at the Canadian U20 National Championships in November.
