MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's soccer team opened its 2019 spring season with a 0-0 draw at Sky Blue FC this afternoon at Sportika Sports in Manalapan, New Jersey.
"Going into a professional environment with such a young team, I was hopeful we wouldn't make any critical mistakes," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "The team did a good job of eliminating opportunities for Sky Blue."
Junior Rylee Foster made four saves, two in each half, and defended six corner kicks.
"Sky Blue was able to get on us on the outside and create a lot of corner kicks, but overall we executed some really good defensive shapes, took away space and pressured the ball really well," Izzo-Brown added. "Rylee had some good saves off her line and was a good leader out of the back. There were a lot of positive takeaways from this match."
The Mountaineers finished with two shots, including a chance late from sophomore defender Kayla Morrison that was stopped by Sky Blue FC., a member of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). WVU earned one corner kick.
"We had moments where we moved the ball well, and I thought we might have been able to sneak one in late," Izzo-Brown said. "Ultimately, Sky Blue just tired us out – they're a talented team."
The Mountaineers open their 2019 home spring season at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m., against Georgetown. Admission is free and open to the public.
