MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior right fielder Darius Hill of the West Virginia University baseball team has been named a candidate for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
A Dallas native, Hill is one of 30 baseball players recognized for excellence both on and off the field. He is one of three Big 12 Conference student-athletes honored, the most of any conference.
This season, Hill leads the team with seven doubles and 14 RBIs, is second with 23 hits, a .303 batting average, a .566 slugging percentage and 43 total bases and is tied for third with three home runs. He has started all 20 games in right field.
Hill was named to the ABCA East All-Region First Team, the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Tournament Team as a junior in 2018. In 2017, he collected All-Big 12 Honorable Mention accolades and Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors. As a freshman in 2016, Hill was named to five freshman All-America teams, the ABCA East All-Region Second Team, the All-Big 12 Second Team and the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
In WVU's career rankings, he is No. 2 in at-bats (779), tied for No. 3 in sacrifice flies (14), No. 4 in hits (252) and doubles (61) and No. 8 in fielding percentage (.990).
Majoring in management, Hill was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2018 and the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team in 2017. He has been recognized on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll throughout his career. Hill was named to the WVU President's List in the fall of 2018 after he earned a 4.0 GPA.
To be eligible for the Senior CLASS Award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 College World Series in June.
Hill and the Mountaineers open Big 12 play this weekend at Baylor, from March 22-24, in Waco, Texas.
