MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fun was had by all this past Sunday, as the West Virginia University women's soccer team held its annual 4-versus-4 tournament, "Three's a Team…the Fourth's a Mountaineer" event on Feb. 24, at the Caperton Indoor Practice Facility.
Open to boys and girls in grades 3-8, as well as college-age students and adults, each team of three players was paired with a WVU women's soccer student-athlete or Mountaineer coach. A day filled with soccer, laughter and friendship resulted in $4,750 raised for Morgantown's Betty Puskar Breast Care Center.
New this season, the Mountaineers also auctioned six game-worn pink jerseys. Combined with a sale of t-shirts, WVU raised an additional $2,100 for the WVU Cancer Institute.
"This not just a tournament for our team. It's a huge event where we have the opportunity to do something bigger than the game of soccer," Mountaineer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said. "We take pride in raising funds for the fight against breast cancer. Our student-athletes and staff appreciate everything the community does to support us during the season, and we look forward to this day of soccer each spring to connect with our fans and to raise money for breast cancer research."
The Mountaineers will continue to raise funds throughout their spring season. Additionally, WVU's spring match against Georgetown on Saturday, April 7, at 2 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, has been designated a Pink Game.
In 14 years, the Mountaineers have raised more than $140,000 for breast cancer research.
