Box Score Baylor scored 16 of the game's final 21 points to outlast West Virginia 82-75 at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas, Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Mountaineers had a 70-66 lead with 3:07 remaining when
Andrew Gordon converted a pair of free throws, two of his season-high 13 points, before going cold.
Â
Two Baylor scores, a Devonte Bandoo jumper and a big Mario Kegler triple 22 seconds later gave the Bears a 71-70 lead.
Â
Following West Virginia's 30-second timeout called with 2:06 left, six Mountaineer players remained on the floor when play resumed and WVU was assessed a technical foul.
Â
"I don't know how many times you're supposed to tell people they're out of the game but I think somebody called him back on," West Virginia coach
Bob Huggins said. "Then the official is walking with him and the other guy calls the technical foul, but we can't make those kind of mistakes."
Â
Bandoo was able to make one of two free throws, and following a
Lamont West miss, Jared Butler beat
Chase Harler off the dribble for a basket to put the Bears up three. Harler fouled Butler on the play and his free throw gave the Bears a two-possession lead at 76-70.
Â
Freshman guard
Trey Doomes finally ended Baylor's 10-0 run with a layup with 50 seconds to go.
Â
Baylor's biggest lead was 10, 82-72, before
Jermaine Haley banked in a 3 with 11 seconds remaining.
Â
West Virginia (10-17, 2-12) led for a good portion of the game, three times the youthful Mountaineers extending their lead to seven points, the latest coming on
Jordan McCabe's right wing 3 with 12 minutes to go.
Â
McCabe, seeing most of the action at point guard today with
Brandon Knapper out after suffering a neck sprain in practice, scored a season-high 14 points.Â
Â
Haley matched his season high for the third time with 13, while Gordon gave WVU a big boost off the bench in place of struggling
Derek Culver with 13 points and four rebounds. Gordon made seven-of-nine from the free throw line after coming into today's game shooting just 40 percent from the charity stripe.
Â
"They played well," Huggins said of his two guards McCabe and Haley.
Â
Other than Gordon going four-for-four from the line late, West Virginia missed six free throws in the second half that helped Baylor get the lead.
Â
"If we make our free throws we win the game," Huggins said.
Â
Lamont West led West Virginia with 16, but struggled in the second half after scoring 10 before intermission. West was just four-of-14 from the field and two-of-nine from 3.
Â
The Mountaineers once again struggled from behind the arc, hitting just six-of-22 for 27.3 percent. In West Virginia's last five losses, it has shot 18.8, 18.8, 13.0, 21.7 and 27.3 percent from behind the arc.
Â
WVU did finish today's game shooting 42.6 percent, the first time since defeating Oklahoma at the Coliseum back on Feb. 2 that it has shot better than 40 percent from the field.
Â
The Mountaineers' 75 points are their most since scoring 79 in their eight-point victory over the Sooners and they played with tremendous effort this afternoon.
Â
"We competed," Huggins said. "I'm excited to get in there and get back with them tomorrow and get ready for (Tuesday night)."
Â
Culver had another tough afternoon with teams focusing on him whenever he catches the ball in the paint. He was just two-of-nine from the floor and five-of-10 from the free throw line for nine points before fouling out with 1:08 remaining.
Â
WVU had just 10 players dressed for today's game with forward
Sagaba Konate and guard Beetle Bolden still sidelined with injuries.
Â
Baylor (18-9, 9-5) was led by Mario Kegler's 23 points. Kegler also hurt West Virginia the first time these two met in Morgantown back on Jan. 21 when he scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Â
Senior guard Makai Mason, who poured in 29 against West Virginia in Morgantown, failed to make a field goal today and finished with just four points.
Â
Bandoo, who averages 7.8 points per game, stepped up this afternoon to score 22 while Mark Vital contributed 15 points and 14 rebounds.
Â
West Virginia returns to the Coliseum on Tuesday night to face TCU, which defeated No. 19 Iowa State earlier today 75-72.
Â
The Horned Frogs (18-9, 6-8) put one on the Mountaineers earlier this year in Fort Worth by defeating West Virginia 98-67.
Â
"I'm excited about going in and getting a win on Tuesday," Huggins said. "They beat Iowa State today so they'll come in hopefully fat and happy."
Â
Tuesday's game will tip at 7 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
