MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior defender Sebastian Garcia-Herreros of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-North Region Third Team, the organization announced on Monday.
The honor marks the first of the Southwest Ranches, Florida, native's career. Garcia-Herreros, a 2019 co-captain, made 17 starts for the Mountaineers this season, helping the squad to the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament championship and berth into the NCAA Tournament. He finished with two assists in 1,506 minutes played, fifth-most on the team, aiding the back line in producing six shutouts on the year.
In all, Garcia-Herreros registered 17 career assists, which is tied for No. 6 all-time in program history.
WVU finished the season with a 10-9-2 mark and enjoyed a four-match win streak from Nov. 12-21, including victories in the MAC Championship Final and NCAA Tournament First Round. The conference tournament title marked WVU's first since 1992.
With the honor, WVU has now had 44 total players honored on the all-region team by the coaches' association, including 18 under coach Marlon LeBlanc's 14-year tenure in Morgantown. Last year, Joey Piatczyc was named to the North Region's first team, before becoming a third team All-America selection.
In addition to the all-region honor, Garcia-Herreros represented the Mountaineers on the All-MAC Second Team last month.
